Delivery & Shipping
Do you offer free shipping?
We offer free domestic shipping on most orders over $150 subtotal. This excludes oversized and bulky items such as rods, blanks, gaffs, some tackle boxes, lobster nets, landing nets and other large items. Any 1 piece rod over 7'10" in length often incurs the biggest oversize fees charged by domestic shipping companies although we do have lower rates via other carriers on the West Coast. Any additional shipping fees will be automatically calculated at checkout before any billing is done.
What countries do you ship to?
We currently ship products within the US and to almost every country in the world, covering all available destination via UPS and DHL. International shipping times depend on the products and destination. Shipping rates are automatically calculated at checkout, for most countries we also collect Duties and Taxes and prepay them so you do not have to deal with the carrier or customs.
How long will it take to get my order?
Standard shipping can take 3-8 business days depending on location and order volume. If you have requested spooling on your reel or rigging on your lures then it could take an additional day or two. Next day & 2 day shipping is available on most domestic orders (for an additional charge). Orders placed after 12pm Pacific Standard Time will be processed the next business day.
What carriers do you ship with?
We work with UPS, FedEx, US Postal Service, GLS and DHL. When your order qualifies for free shipping or has a rod that qualifies for discounted shipping we reserve the right to choose which carrier it is sent with, otherwise you can pick the service you want. UPS Ground ranges from 1 to 7 day delivery, USPS Priority Mail is typically 1-3 days but is not a guaranteed express service, and USPS Ground Advantage takes roughly 3-7 business days. Longer rods are generally sent via GLS unless otherwise specified, this service ranges from 1 - 10 days.

The Avet Pro EX 50 is the San Diego Special — SDS on the front crossbar, and an established model designation rather than a regional nickname. It is one of the most respected and most widely fished reels in the long-range fleet, and it has accounted for a lot of big yellowfin. The reason starts with the frame: the top is open, so you can watch the line the whole time and clear a wrap without taking your eyes off the fish. That open top is also the line between this reel and its wide sibling — the EXW 50 carries a top crossbar, and only the narrow EX 50 wears the SDS label.
This is the go-to size for long-range yellowfin. Long range here means trips over ten days running to Hurricane Bank, where the fish are well over 100 lb, many in the 200 lb range and some in the 300s — several world records out of that same water have gone over 400 lb. What makes the size work is mechanical: larger gears, a larger spool and more drag, which is exactly what long-soaking a mackerel or a caballito asks for, and chunking as well.
We have watched this reel earn that reputation first-hand. Back when we were running charters we had fishermen aboard from all over the country, and a lot of them were fishing Avet 50s they had bought from us. After tangling with cow-sized tuna, the 50s were the reels that had not failed and did not feel squirrelly afterward — the one product that came through the whole thing without a hitch. There is still no more fishable reel in this size class, in our opinion.
Rods. For the rail there are only a couple of good options: the UC RCX or RGPX 76 Invictus, or the RGPX 76 Viper. Closer to home those same rail rods cover high-speed trolling for 100–200 lb bluefin and kite fishing. A dedicated trolling rod is the better tool on paper — the RCX 40XO, or an Okuma PCH-TRB-5101XH or 6101XH — but plenty of buyers still take the rail rod for its versatility: it gets you around your outboards, and it saves moving the boat to keep a fish in front of a rod holder. Even if, honestly, fighting a fish out of a rod holder on a private boat is the more effective way to do it.

Does it come left-handed?
Does it come left-handed?
On left-hand retrieve, Avet is not like anyone else, and there is a reason. Harry, one of Avet's owners, is a lefty — so they go out of their way to build a left-hand model in almost every size and model they make. Among American manufacturers, Accurate and Seigler look after lefties too; nearly everyone else offers one or two models, if any. And a question we get a lot: does Avet make left-hand reels in colors? They did, six-plus years back, in a few colors — then stopped, for a practical reason. The only part that differs on a left-hand reel is the gearbox, and colored parts vary from batch to batch, so they kept ending up with mismatched colored parts. It is simply easier to build them in silver. A silver lefty is a manufacturing consequence, not a shortcut.

A note on availability. Avet holds a large stock of parts and assembles reels as they are ordered, so most Avet reels are not sitting on a shelf at the time of purchase. We order and receive from Avet three to four times a week, so a reel we do not have typically lands in three to four business days — longer on larger or specialty models. If you want an odd size, color or a left-hand retrieve, that is usually a short wait rather than a dead end.
