Pick the hook for how you fish
Circle hooks are the standard for bait fished on a slow draw — you let the fish turn and the hook finds the corner of the jaw instead of getting swallowed. The clean release is part of it, but the bigger reason is your leader: a corner-of-the-mouth hookup keeps the line clear of the teeth, where it only has to survive scales and body — far less abrasive than a swallowed hook, which leaves teeth grinding your leader the entire fight. The ringed Charlie Brown is the one to know when the bait is small and the fish isn't: a heavy-duty small circle, inline, that won't bend out on the demanding stuff. Live bait hooks in the flyliner and Gorilla patterns are what most SoCal anglers pin a sardine on. Assist hooks ride the top of a jig for slow pitch and speed jigging. Trebles and inline singles swap onto plugs and stickbaits. Big game hooks in the Jobu and Southern Tuna patterns cover the heavy end.

The one leader we build
Most of what's on this page you'll pick yourself, and that's how it should be — terminal tackle is personal. The exception is the night tuna jigging leader, and we make those up here: a heavy assist hook crimped to 200lb-plus leader and a ball bearing swivel. It's the rig for the nighttime bite, and it's the connection that gets tested hardest when a good fish eats a jig in the dark. Ask and we'll build you one.
