WHAT'S NEW FROM PENN?
Penn Metal Senator
Finally,
the 113 Metal version has arrived! After handling the reel,
I have to admit I like it more than when I played with one
at ICAST a year ago. Kind of reminds me of Pro Gear, except
it's a better value. The reel uses Stainless steel in the
pinion gears and main gears, precision machined. There are
three high-quality shielded stainless steel ball bearings.
Unlike gimmicky unshielded bearings that clog with
contaminants and salt buildup, Penn's higher-grade stainless
steel ball bearings were designed for performance in a
marine environment. High-grade stainless bearings are better
than coated, non-shielded bearings. That's why this will be
a long-lived reliable addition to your fishing arsenal. The
113 MTL uses Penn's soft-grip ergonomic fighting handle,
designed for angler comfort and power & leverage. The reel
features an aluminum frame and spool and best of all, it's
an Integrated Side Plate design. Yep, like the Torques, this
reel features the patented I.S.P. This gives the reel a more
rigid assembly, enabling the reel to achieve higher drag
settings with fewer parts. The higher gear ratio and a super
strong ISP double dog anti-reverse system provide you with
speed AND power. The reel also incorporates Penn's
Versa-Drag, allowing for a wider range of drag settings. On
the left sideplate you'll also find a bearing adjustment
cap, allowing you to eliminate excessive end play. It's not
a "backlash" preventer, it's a bearing adjustment cap. You
can reduce side to side motion or opt to induce more
freespool play (.003-.005"). Bottom line, typically robust
Penn 113 with lessons learned from the Baja Special applied
to a more standard sized reel. For a lot of guys, this one
makes some sense to own.
(4.25:1
Gearing, 475 yds of 30# mono line capacity, weight...not
exactly sure yet)
Penn Sargus and Pursuit
Penn
saw the need for smaller baitcasting size reels long ago,
and offered the 900 Series Internationals for those clients.
But, there was also a need for a high quality low profile
baitcaster for the guys fishing the bays, some freshwater
and brackish water exploits on light line. The new Sargus
and Pursuit reels cover these bases quite nicely, and they
do so at reasonable prices.
Penn's really going after the
inshore fishing market aggressively. Their 3 piece travel
rods can be a great addition to these new reels and are well
worth checking out, too. I bought one a couple year back and
consider it one of the brighter things I've done in terms of
fishing-fun-per-dollar. Here's a link to the
travel rods.
Sargus
The
little Sargus offers a perfect match of smooth function and
rugged durability. It's features a machined aluminum frame
and right side plate, stainless steel clutch, externally
adjustable magnetic and internally adjustable centrifugal
brake system, carbon fiber drag washers and 11.5#'s of
maximum drag! You'll crank in 27 inches of line per handle
rotation given it's quick 6.4:1 retrieve rate. The Sargus &
Pursuit will also hold a good 200 yards or 12# line.
Pursuit
Penn's Pursuit offers similar features and construction,
basically the same piece with a couple distinctions. First
off, instead of running seven stainless steel bearings it
uses six and there's no magnetic braking, only the internal
centrifugal brake is offered for cast control. But, for most
of us, that's just fine. Both the Sargus and Pursuit are
easy to take-down, easy to maintain, and well built.
The Baja Special
4/0 Narrow
Now you see 'em, now you
don't.
We've been waiting on this reel for a long time, a couple
decades. Penn spent three years perfecting the Baja Special! For 2008
it's going away. While the West Coasters loved the reel, it took time
for our East Coast clients to recognize it's virtues. Sadly, the 4/0
Narrow will not be made again. We committed to buying up a significant
quantity of the reels simply because it's a darn good reel and we know
folks want 'em, especially now that they will be in short supply and
going extinct. Don't worry about parts support, it's use of standard
Penn parts with the exception of frame and spool make these easy to
service for decades to come.
Here's some background on the reel. The new
4/0 narrow has a lot of things going for it, like a machined aluminum
topless frame and aluminum spool, better handle, upgraded components,
retractable lugs... It's a dandy casting machine with some very
good braking power. They're fairly expensive at $249 (but
we're doing something about that...), but compete quite nicely
against some reels that go for $100 more. The new reels has a
4.25:1 gear ratio and holds 375 yards of 30# mono. It's going to be a
solid performer within it's line class. For bait fishing I like
30-40# on the reel, but for tossing iron you might be inclined to bump
up to 40-50#. With the strong aluminum spool, Spectra also makes
for a good option and allows greater line capacity for use with 40#
mono. Please click on the pic for a better view of the new reel.
In terms of component upgrade, the new 113HN
offers quite a bit. Componentry in enhanced with a stainless
steel main gear and heat treated pinion, a disengaging pinion gear for
improved freespool, aircraft grade sealed stainless steel ball
bearings, over sized soft-grip handle and eccentric lever... There's a
lot to like. The drags are enhanced as well, with lots of
surface area and well proven drag materials employed. Fact is,
the new Baja Special will turn a good 20 pounds of drag.
That's so much more than anyone will ever fish, it's a lot of drag and
is more appropriate for 50-60# line test reels! So, you've got some
superior casting and brakes with the new reel from Penn. That's
not too bad, fact is it's darn good!
Here's the deal, we made a large buy, Penn's
lowered our dealer cost, and we're passing the savings your way. The
reel is now available for
$189.99. You can order the reel rigged or
without line, either way you've got a great deal on a wonderful
reel.

GLD
20II, 30II and 50II Graphite Two Speed Lever Drag Reels
 The
only reels to
combine Penn’s legendary two speed lever drag performance with the light
weight, strength and corrosion resistance of a one piece graphite frame.
Perfect for fighting bluewater gamefish of all sizes, from light tackle
marlin to sails, wahoo, tuna, dolphin, California yellowtail and more.
Also great for tough bottom-dwelling species like grouper and amberjack.
• New push-button shifting system makes it easier than ever to change
gears, even in the heat of battle.
• Machined anodized aluminum spool, four sealed stainless steel ball
bearings and machined stainless steel gears for smooth performance over
the long run.
• Graphite rod clamp for easy, secure attachment.
• Penn’s renowned International® style lever drag system with pre-set
feature and HT100® drag material.
So,
what's our opinion of the new reel? I think they're great for
1-3 day trips, will fill your rail time chores on longer trips quite
well. It's a good product for the private boater who needs a two
speed, doesn't want to bite the bullet for a International, but
definitely wants more than a 6/0. They are no 30VSW, but they'll
catch a lot of the same fish. As was recently proven on a long
ranger out of San Diego with a yellowfin tuna close enough to 300# to
count. The GLD's replace Penn's KG series of reels, offering some
improvements over their initial introduction. Their freespool is
better, for instance, drag has also been enhanced. They
represent a very solid value in an increasingly competitive arena of
light weight two-speed leverdrag reels. I've yet to hear a complaint
from an owner of one of these reels. Client feedback has been
very favorable. That counts for something.
Penn also makes a
non-two-speed version of the GLD's in both the
20 and 30 size. The capacities of the reels are
exactly the same. Four stainless steel ball
bearings, precision machined gears, machined
anodized aluminum spool, and a graphite one
piece frame. These leverdrags are a fine value
and excellent addition to any angler's trolling
or heavy rail arsenal.

SENATORS,
JIGMASTER, LD's and GS Series
New From Penn
Penn's just
introduced a new reel in their popular GTi series of bigwater levelwinds.
The new 320GTi LD. The new reel features a one piece graphite frame,
anodized aluminum spool, four stainless steel ball bearings, Penn's very
successful HT100 drags and a rod clamp. The reel will hold 320 yards of
20# mono, and offers a 4.3:1 gear ratio. It's going to be a very
good reel to own, especially for guys using downriggers, light line
trolling...

Penn
Graphite GS series Reels
The GS products are a flat out home
run for Penn. They combine some great features, that really help an
angler get the upper hand. The reels feature high retrieve speed, a
comfortable sleek design, star drag, lightweight one-piece
graphite composite frame, high strength graphite composite rod clamp
system and oversized HT100 drag system. The GS series feature bearings
not bushings for improved casting. These reels are quite nice, and
excellent values. They represent a very good value in terms of
performance for the dollar. The features are strong, and the
fishability is superb.
Price includes shipping charges within continental USA.

Penn has done well with their GS Series. Their enhanced 525 Mag
goes one step further by combining a little more technology to assist a
persons casting. It's an exciting product for saltwater types, and
will also have some application for freshwater anglers. The reel's
engineered for record setting casts with lighter baits. The Mag25
uses four rare earth magnets and a sliding adjustment on the left side
plate to adjust the casting speed of the spool. Similar
features have been very popular among the freshwater bass guys for
several years, but now it's perfected for us salty folks. With the
525 Mag, the spool is also totally free from the spindle when casting.
Five aircraft quality bearings, plus a one way roller bearing and
infinite anti-reverse, provide ultra smooth precision performance
whether casting, retrieving or fighting a fish.

Penn
Senator II Deluxe The 4/0 and 6/0 Senators are standard issue
trolling reels that can also perform in a casting role. Like the
Jigmasters, you can do a lot of updating with these products, but you
have to start somewhere. The basic product is a great value, and it can
grow with your needs too. I only work with the HL style product,
these
are the ones you want, not the scale down models - especially if you've
a mind for upgrading over time. Both the 4/0 and 6/0 reels excel in the
trolling role, both reels are supplied with rod clamps, star drag with
HT100 material. They are an essential piece in your tackle assortment.
Penn is doing some revisions on the Senator line, specifically the 114.
This reel has been available in three configurations plus the wide
version. In 2001 there will be two basic 6/0 reels, a 114 and
114H. The H model will incorporate the improved frame and spool,
while the standard 114 will retain the post frame and chromed bronze
spool. I'll be revising the text on this page to reflect the
changes...right after the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach. Senators
are also available with a left hand retrieve as a special order. Please
e-mail me for info, and delivery time.

Penn
500L @ $54.95 Here's a standard. The Penn 500 is
probably one of the best values in the market. The 500 series feature a
quick take down design, allowing you to exchange spools of line quickly
and efficiently. Okay, so what's the downside...there are two
compromises from these reels. First, using light line 12-15 lb. may pose
a problem with line getting stuck between the spool and sideplate, it's
a nasty habit. Secondly, you get bushings not bearings. That's why
Accurate has built a booming business. You really do get what you pay
for, but you can upgrade!
The Jigmaster is a
dandy product, but when you step up to the GS series you really do gain
a lot (4 bearings, faster retrieve, tighter tolerance for light line use
and durability...). You should expect to get something for your money
when you spend more for a reel, and that's the case. But, the Jigmasters
allow you to upgrade as your needs progress. That makes this a great
starter reel, or basic equipment for a fishing dabbler.
Features:
HT100 drags, right side take-down, black anodized aluminum spool,
counter balanced handle with non-slip soft grip knobs, star drags,
clicker...(Jigmaster 500 @ 275/30lb, 4:1 ratio, 22 oz.; 501 @ 500/12 [20
is a lot more realistic] 4:1, 20 oz.

LEVELWIND GTI SERIES & SPINNING REELS
Penn
310GTi
The 310 just may get more use than any other reel you own, fishing local
waters. You'll find yourself using this as your preferred downrigger
reel, but don't neglect it as a dandy light weight troller and "rental"
rig. It's easy to operate, and you don't need to bother leveling the
line on retrieve. Unlike the similarly priced Shimano, I've found this
product to be very reliable through a lot of abuse the past couple of
years. I've yet to replace any
parts
on my own Penn, I can't say the same about the Shimano TR-100G I
own-which goes through about 1 levelwind tooth per month during the
season.
Features: one piece graphite frame, oversized HT100 drags, sealed
stainless steel ball bearings and lightweight aluminum spool. Sliding
anti-reverse button provides direct drive option, rugged clicker,
counterbalanced no slip soft grip handle.
The Penn GTi Series reels have earned high marks for reliability,
durability and functionality. They are great reels for their intended
purpose, catching fish, with the convenience of a levelwind feature.
There's a broad range of models, suitable for fishing moderate to
heavier line tests.
