Hydro Magnum
The
Hydro Mag is earning lots of praises by anglers. It's a newer,
updated version of their older L-Jack series. It's really a totally
different lure, but it fills the same slot, with some advantages.
The lure's lip is plastic, it runs true, never gets out of tune. It's
through wired so you'll have a serious strength advantage over other bolsa
wood lures. And, of course this lure is made from a high impact
plastic, with super strong hooks and a tough, durable finish. It's a
quality lure, built for the long haul. Over the past year this lure
has been a staple of private boaters trying to drag deeper for tuna.
It produces, and it will take more than tuna and yellowtail. It's a
lure that will work well trolled, can be cast effectively, and will
produce for you.
The Hydro Mags are
available in three sizes and several color patterns, as pictured.
It's well worth owning a few of these lures. Promise.
Want to go a little deeper?
Yo-Zuri has an answer for that one with their new
Hydro magnum Adjustable Deep Diver. It's
similar in size to their largest Hydro Mag (the
R388 pictured above). It's a little fatter
bodied, and has a much larger bill. It also
has a built in rattle to attract even more
attention. Additionally, there are two
attachment points and another ring under those
positions for attaching a weight, to give you even
deeper depths to troll. These are pretty
large lures, for larger fish. They are over
seven inches in length, weighing 3 1/2 ounces.
When not being dragged they float, but with some
forward momentum they really dig deeply. The
new lures run a reasonable $15.99 .
With their new broad bill, thru-wired
construction, they'll run true and hold up well.
For deeper trolling, they come with two
different attachment point for your mainline,
and another attachment point under the bill for
securing a weight for even deeper diving.

Yo-Zuri Crystal
Minnow
We've
got a lot of guys who suggested we stock the deep
diving Crystal Minnows from Yo-Zuri. They
are typically folks fishing inshore on a kayak, a
dock, or small boat. Even the folks fishing
from shore like 'em. So, we brought 'em into
our inventory. Like the other lures from
this Japanese supplier, the finish and overall
quality of the lures are terrific as I hope you
can tell from our pictures. They're dandy
looking baits, and their action is very lifelike.
We're stocking the new lures
in four very popular patterns that imitate the
inshore forage likely to draw immediate strikes
from predatory gamefish. We're stocking the
Crystal Minnows in three sizes, perfect for
inshore and offshore applications, all deep
divers.
Again, based
upon some of our inshore finatics feedback, we
have expanded the Crystal Minnow line-up to
include a few more models. We've added the shallow
diver lures to our stock. The shallow divers are
available in suspending action, in two sizes a 3
5/7" 1/4 ounce and 4 3/8" 1/2 ouncer. The
streamlined body is perfectly balanced to provide
a radical side-to-side wiggling motion and lateral
rolling action that catches and reflects even more
light. In fact, it's so reflective that you can
even see them in the moonlight! Great for inshore
fishing, night and early dawn bites.

Yo-Zuri Hydro Squirt
The
new Hydro Squirt is an excellent squid imitation cast and troll lure.
It's a translucent squid look-alike, with flowing tentacles and a great
finish. The thing looks alive, much more realistic than their
previous somewhat similar lure. The new one has a better finish and
the translucent design looks alive. The big eyes also more closely
mimic the arrow squids we see out here. Try one in tight at San
Clemente or Catalina, try one off PV. If the squid are floating
anywhere, give one a try. It's a good bet the fish will be
receptive.
We stock these
neat lures in five fish catching patterns and
now also have two sizes to pick from! From
top to bottom, red/pink, red/yellow,
brown/yellow. The pink and green/gold
patterns are pictured below. The larger lures are 7 3/5 inches,
weigh 1 3/4 ounces, and are floaters. The
smaller version is 5 5/8 inches in length and weigh 5/8 ounce. So,
cast one out, let the water surface settle a
bit, then give it a pull with the rod, reel up,
pull again. The thing will look good
enough to eat. Let the fish try 'em, but
don't you go making calamari out of one, you'll
bust a tooth!

Surface Cruiser Lure
Here's a lure for the Baja bound angler.
Tossing big lures inshore, off the shore of way offshore can produce some
terrific action. The big 2 1/8oz, 6.75" surface lure from Yo-zuri is
a proven producer for a wide variety of fish. The lure is made from
PolyBalsa urethane for long term durability. It's got a great
quality finish and the right action to attract some serious attention from
the fish!
Looking for a larger size popper?
We've got you covered. The Yo-Zuri Surface Bull GT is one large
popper, with huge eyes and a large cupped head. It's a full 7 2/3
inches in length, and weighs in at 3 1/2 ounces. This is the popper
to have with you when you travel to Panama looking for giant rooster fish!
Of course the lure is thru-wired, so it can hang with the big boys for
which it's intended. The Bull will take on tuna, rooster fish, and
all sorts of fish that love munching on other gamefish.
If you're a long
range fan you know this lure's value for bringing in the big boys. It's standard gear for
wahoo, but don't think that's all. This hard bodied, deep running lure will also bring in
hard strikes from aggressive feeders like mako sharks, tuna and yes, marlin.
The lure is rigged for the big ones.
Yo-Zuri's Bonita trolling lures are a standard for both tuna and wahoo. They troll
very true, and at high speed. There's a size suitable to most gamefish, from under
6" in length to over 10 inches! The great finishes found on these lures are
just what you'd expect from this high quality Japanese manufacturer.
Lessons from 2000's
great local season. Towards the end of the season we had a great body of yellowfin
locally. They would not bite surface lures, frustrating us a lot. They'd take bait,
boil on it. They'd not take standard trolled lures like the Magnums or
Rapalas. They did take the Bonita's with gusto.

Yo-Zuri Minnows
Yo-zuri has come out with
another series of gorgeous lures, the Mag Popper and Mag Darter. These lures have an
ingenious design incorporating a magnet which changes position for casting or retrieve,
improving casting characteristics considerably. The new holographic finish is also
excellent. I've been a fan of Yozuri since I first saw one of their lures a few years
back. They are Japan's best lure manufacturer, and produce an excellent quality bait - a
thing of beauty. Unfortunately they generally are hard to find, and expensive. They have
changed US distributors, so inventory levels will improve in the future (I hope). But,
don't look for any drop in price, these are expensive lures to produce.
Mag Darter
5" lure @ $13.99 The mag darter is a sub-surface casting lure, with realistic
patterns, lots of reflective flash, and works well on a slow erratic
retrieve. It's an effective slow moving lure, cruising sub-surface with
an exceptional light reflecting finish. The patterns are very,
very lifelike.
