daiwa_logo.gif (3046 bytes)Daiwa Saltwater Reels Daiwa produces some excellent reels, and they've really done some great things with their newest additions to the line. This Japanese manufacturer is very conservative, they are slow to introduce new contraptions, but once developed they stay with a winner. An indication of this is the Black Gold spinning series. I've been using these reels since I lived back in Texas...that's since 1984! The BG series are, in my opinion, as good a spinning reel you can buy. The conventional style SL20 and 30 baitcasters are standards out here, and very well regarded for their light line handling, casting, and smooth drags. The newest SL series reels are exceptional jig reels and live bait reels (the new models have arrived-pictured below). Additionally, Daiwa just added some innovative features in their newest reels for 2005: the Luna, Saltist and Coastal reels.  Diawa has some very strong contenders in the saltwater arena, and their new models really hit the nail on the head. Frankly, Daiwa's quality and innovation in reel design was one big reason why we elected to move away from Shimano's anti-competitive BS.  Daiwa represents a better competitive value, their quality is quite evident and they allow us to offer our clients a better value without the anti-competitive routine of the folks from Shimano.

Below, the newest from Daiwa...

New Daiwa Kite Reel

Daiwa's Dendoh Tanacom Bull 1000 (TB 1000) is something warranting excitement from folks targeting DEEP water fish or fishing off a kite (see item 10). In the old days there were a limited number of add-on power winders on the market for commercial application that fit a specific reel. These were bulky and expensive. Daiwa designed the Dendoh power-assisted reels from the ground up to provide deep water anglers an alternative. The Tanacom Bull (Tunacom) was designed for deep saltwater application, and also for use as a kite reel. It's large enough to hold the appropriate amount of line for it's intended application, and robust enough to provide many, many years of exceptional service. It's also relatively compact for it's application, much more so than the add-on alternative. The reel can be used by crank (robust levelwind design), by direct power with the supplied 9' 12 volt DC cable, or with the addition of optional battery packs. It features 4 ball bearings, heavy duty brass and bronze gearing, variable control of winding speed and power and a programmable jigging function. There's a digital readout measuring line out and distance retrieved from the bottom, a programmable auto stop which stops winding once a lure reaches the surface... The TB1000 is the model with heavy duty marine application in mind. It's robust, high capacity, and most  surprisingly affordable.

The ultimate kite reel quickly winds in the kite and stops by itself while you fight the fish. Plenty of power and capacity for deep drops.

Daiwa Millionaire Classic

Diawa's Millionaire 250 and 300's are relatively inexpensive functional inshore and freshwater reels. What we're offering is an upgraded product from the standard Millionaire, and they're a lot prettier too! We tend to favor red colored reels apparently. The combination of red and gold used on these reels is quite attractive and unique in reels this affordable.

We have two sizes, in both left and right hand retrieve. The reels feature an infinite Anti-Reverse, machined aluminum spools, three ball bearings, centrifugal spool brake and even have CLICKERS! The smaller 250 size will hold 280 yards of 12# line, while the 300 will take 380 yds of 12# and 300 of 15#. Both feature 5:1 gears with a reel weight of 11.3 and 11.8 ounces respectively.

Daiwa Black Widow II

Here's a nifty new series of reels from Daiwa. There are four models in this series, a less expensive version of their very popular Coastal 153 baitcaster and three small spinning reels. All are excellent choices for folks targeting inshore fish or as dual purpose fresh and saltwater reels on light line(15# or less). The reels are priced quite well, very functional and beautifully constructed. All the spinning reels are  shipped with a spare spool, so you've got some flexibility. The small baitcaster (based upon the 153 Coastal) even offers a magnetic braking system! Beauty is more than skin deep with these new reels. But, there's no denying that the black, gold and silver finish is very eye appealing. There's also no doubt that they'll be welcome additions to your arsenal. The new Black Widow II's offer a deadly combination of performance and good looks!

Here's a run-down on the particulars:

*The Coastal 153 (below) offers bearings more suited for hard saltwater use without maintenance. The Black Widow 153 does not use the CRB bearings and uses composite sideplates instead of cast aluminum. All other models within the Black Widow series are very well suited for harsher treatment with less regular maintenance concerns.

Daiwa Inshore Reels

Daiwa Coastal!

In 2005 Daiwa really made some significant additions to their saltwater line-up.  While the Saltist reels garnered the most press, my favorite reel from Daiwa was their small Coastal Inshore Special.  This little baitcasting powerhouse is right on the money in terms of offering what we need for inshore fishing.  It's small, but very strong, and it's made for harsh saltwater conditions.  The reel features total corrosion protection, five CRBB corrosion resistant ball bearings plus a roller bearing.  The reel has a Centriflex automatic centrifugal spool braking system to help eliminate backlashes.  There's an infinite anti-reverse, aluminum alloy frame and sideplate, and a machined aluminum spool!  The reel features a stainless steel main shaft, perforated spool for faster startups.  The thing spins!!!  It has excellent freespool for wonderfully long casts!  You've also got brakes!  Great brakes!! Featuring a seven disc/fiber composite wet drag system.  Let's review, seven element drag, five bearings, stainless steel where you need it... And, loosening one screw allows you to pivot the sideplate and pop out your spool for easy maintenance.  The Coastal is one very well thought out reel, and quite honestly one of my favorites.  If you're fishing 15# and lower line weights, this little reel makes so much sense that it's a no brainer.  To make things even better, they're priced at only $129.99 and for 2008 we have a new left hand version available too

Team Daiwa Viento

Here's another nifty new light line reel from Daiwa, the Team Daiwa Viento. This reel is really more for the freshwater fishermen. It's a compact 12-14# class baitcaster with a 6.3:1 gearing. The reel features Daiwa's free floating spool and magforce backlash control. The newest feature of this reel is the "Twitchin' Bar. After a cast you depress the bar above the levelwind and the reel automatically takes up slack in the line, or moves the lure a small bit. The amount of line picked up depends upon the speed with which you depress the bar.

Daiwa Luna!

Here's another wonderful new reel from Daiwa.   These new Daiwa reels are made for fishing.  Here's a great case in point about the benefits of competition in terms of pressing a manufacturer to build better gear. The new Daiwa Luna 253 and 300 are excellent in design and execution.  These new reels replace the 253 and 300 CVZ's.  There are several upgrades. The reels are made from bar stock aluminum, machined not cast. The exquisite machining is on a level with Daiwa's Saltiga reels, same for the rich anodized gold finish. They feature CRBB bearings for extended service life. (Shielded bearings being less prone to maintenance issues than some other nameless manufacturer's "open" AllRustBearings)

Most noticeable with the new Daiwa Luna reels is the free floating spool.  Like the Sealine-X series reels, when the reel is in the casting mode the spool totally disengages from the drive train.  The reel feature five corrosion resistant ball bearings and 1 roller bearing.  The 253 has a massive 7 disc drag, and the 300 features an 11 disk drag system!  Great power from both of these nifty reels.  You'll also notice the handle has been upgraded from the older CVZ's.  These are superb reels, in my estimation better than that other nameless company's TE's (which they have the audacity to try to charge $400 for).

Daiwa Offshore Reels

NEW 2006 Daiwa Sealine-X Saltwater Casting and Jigging Reels

Daiwa's NEW Sealine-X Saltwater Casting and Jigging Reels
These new and enhanced reels are Baja X-Treme, they are not for relaxed fishing, they're made for hyperactive first to the boil gets bit fishing. The reels are excellent for tossing iron or bait. Reels in this series  reels feature Super Speed Shaft for longer casts (like a neutral), selectable centrifugal casting brakes, waterproof sealed drags - waterproof, fast gearing, tough marine bronze and stainless gears,
aluminum spool, composite frame and sideplates, rod clamp... For 2006 Daiwa upgraded the reel by adding improved CRB bearings for enhanced corrosion resistance. Unlike another well advertised Japanese manufacturer Daiwa uses shielded bearings for greater service life. The handle was also upgraded for 2006.

The Sealine reels are a very strong value, offering great performance at a very reasonable price. In past charters I've seen the 40 and 50 models bring in tuna over 100 pounds! That's a nice score for a lightweight casting reel, with a high gear ratio no less.

Daiwa Saltist Reels!
FREE $20 Gift Card on all models!

The new Saltist reels have proven themselves very capable performers. Daiwa expanded the line in 2007 to offer two gear ratios for added versatility. They further expanded the line in 2008 by introducing two smaller versions (20 and 30 size) and levelwinds. The Saltist series of reels are some of the finest reels made for under $200. That's a proven fact at this point.

If you've been drooling over Saltigas for the past couple years Daiwa has made a less expensive alternative that's going to offer many of the same superb features and fishing strengths as the more expensive Saltiga. Speaking about strengths, the reels metal, not composite, not plastic, they're metal.  The Saltist has a solid frame, the sideplates are metal, unlike some posers from another well known Japanese firm, there's not a bunch of internal plastic on the Saltist.  The Saltist is one strong reel.  It's made to go up against some stiff competition in the marketplace, and it's made to take on some big tough fish, too!

The Saltist uses a multi stack drag system with nine elements.  The drag performance will prove to be very good and reliable.  Similarly the bearings used will prove long lived and quite reliable.  Like the Saltiga reels, the casting performance will be excellent in the hands of an experienced angler. In the hands of a novice, they'll give you all the distance you need, and flyline a bait to great effect. Daiwa did their homework on this line of reels.  Just like the Saltiga arriving after Shimano introduced their Trindidad series.  Daiwa found areas to improve upon Shimano's offering.  In my estimation they did so again in a big way with their Saltist line.  They're better than Toriums in the areas that count: construction, drags and bearings. (Of course that's my opinion, and you can confirm for yourself...)

Here's a comparison with Shimano's Torium:  The Diawa uses fewer parts demonstrating better design simplicity and less to go wrong.  The Daiwa has large gears like the Torium for improved power. But, Daiwa's pinion gear is much larger than the Shimano, for power and longer service life. Diawa's sideplates are cast aluminum, not a plastic sideplate covered by stamped aluminum for the cosmetic appearance of strength. Shimano hides that weakness  behind a thin shiny stamped and painted aluminum plate. The drag is better, the component parts are better on the Daiwa. Diawa makes use of better functioning shielded bearings while the Shimano's are open allowing for more maintenance issues down the road. The Shimano has a softer knob on the crank, Daiwa uses a harder material. In the areas that count the Daiwa is a better reel. Overall, it is my personal opinion that the Daiwa is a better reel and a better buy. Feel free to make your own comparisons.
