Tiburon SST Smart Shift Reels
 Tiburon waited a long time
to get into the reel business. They
waited until they had something more to say than just the upgraded Penn
component enhancements that they could have come to market with a decade
ago. They waited until they really had something special to "say."
They waited until now. Now they have something to talk about, something
to distinguish themselves with. Now they have something truly
exciting to offer anglers. Now they have an automatic two speed
reel that senses when to upshift or downshift, based on your preferences
and application.
New for 2005 are Tiburon's series of
Quick Change Reels. These innovative reels incorporate many of the
features that made Tiburon successful. They are made from machined
aluminum, feature excellent freespool as well as enhanced drag
performance. They will be a delight in your hands. The size is
right for fishing what we use most, 15-30# lines for anything from
sailfish, light line marlin, tuna, yellowtail or even bass. The
flexibility of gear-set swaps make the wide application a reality for

Tiburon Smart
Shift Reels!
 Big
power, smaller size! The innovative folks at Tiburon dropped off
three new reels for us to salivate over last Friday. The three new
reels match up to the single speed reels we showed off on this page last
week. There three sizes, appropriate for 20-40# fishing.
It's all a matter of line class, use of spectra for backing and your
particular taste in deciding which one or which ones you want to go with
for your particular application. They're all sweeeeeeet!
For those new to the Smart Shift
design, they're automatic shifting two speed reels. All three of
the new reels feature 5.9:1 and 2.8:1 gearing. You've got speed
for winding iron or a wahoo bomb, as well as some power when the fish
decides to get feisty. They spin very well, cast great, and the
drag performance is nothing short of confidence inspiring. These
are among the finest reels money can buy. They work well. I
only have two concerns to express about 'em. First off, be
prepared and forewarned. If you don't already own one of these
reels and you purchase one, don't think that it will be your last.
Most of our clients who have bought a Tib Smart Shift reel from us have
come back for more. They're that good. The next concern
comes from a deckhand who mentioned to me that he didn't like the SST
reels. His complaint, "When folks get their fish to the boat
they're still green." What he meant is that because this reel
design keeps pressure on the fish all the way to the boat, the fish
doesn't have a chance to tire you out and they can still have a bit of
fight left in 'em. That's a good thing for both angler and fish in
my estimation. If you practice catch and release it's going to be
easier on the fish. If you practice catch and kill, well, you'll
be getting your job done a whole lot faster!

Smart Shift - Automatic Shift Two Speed
Reels
 The SST8 and SST12 Smart Shift Reels™ are available with two different
gear ratios. The standard "High-Speed" models, are equipped with
5.9:1 and 2.8:1 gear ratios and have a drag system that is smooth and
efficient at any drag setting and our Zero-Resistance™ free spool.
When the reel is in high gear, it's capable of retrieving 44-inches of
line for every full rotation of the reel handle.
 The
HT, or High-Torque models of the SST8 and SST12 reels
are designed to give the angler more cranking power and are equipped
with 4.7:1 and 1.9:1 gear ratios. To compliment the more powerful
lower gear ratios, the High-Torque models also have a slightly more
aggressive drag system than their High-Speed cousins. SST8 and SST12
HT reels are capable of retrieving 35-inches of line per full rotation
of the reel handle.
 Following up on the successful introduction of the 8 and 12, Tiburon
introduced their new 16, 20, 30 and smallest yet, the new 6.

Folks, purchasing an
expensive reel like a Tiburon, a reel you have
likely not had the opportunity to fish, may be
a risky proposition. Can the reel
perform as described? Are they worth the
money? I can flatly say YES! We have
many happy clients, guys who bought one and
have come back for more. That's quite a
testament of any manufacturer's product,
especially given the expense of Tiburon reels.
When their performance is factored into the
equation, well they really are not so
expensive. Here is a letter I received
6/26/04 from one of our clients regarding his
experience with a Tiburon reel:
Mark,
I don't have all the stuff for logging in to
your bulletin board, but wanted to let you
know about my Mexico Midriff trip using the
Tiburon 2speed. I came into your shop and
asked you to talk me out of buying the
Tiburon 2speed to replace my stolen
Accurates. You warned me that after using
the Tib, I wouldn't want anything else and
would probably end up buying more Tibs in
the next larger sizes. I bought the
smallest Tib and you matched it with a GUSA
6 1/2 rigged for 40lb. That combo was just
unbelievable. The Tib casts like a dream
and GUSA has the perfect midsection for
horsing the hogs. I took unfair
advantage of 30lb class YT casting iron and
flylining live mackerel. We were in 60ft of
water with some nasty bottom features that
sawed off a lot of big fish. The Tib
performed flawlessly, shifting to low gear
when necessary and high gear when they
charged the boat. I was able to cast even
the lightweight surface jigs with no
problem. Backlashes were minimal and mostly
the result of operator error. I have a
beautiful Badfish wrapped 700M and Tiburon
framed, highspeed Jigmonster, but I let my
guide use it the whole time. I just never
wanted to put down that Tiburon 2sp.
The rig cost me nearly $1000, including rod
sock, Chark hat and free shirt, but it was
money well spent. I'm not a rich man and
pay a minor fortune in spousal/child
support, but that was the best money I have
ever spent. Thanks for being an honest
businessman and fellow fisherman.
