Is
it the scent or the action? For my money it's the action that
draws attention, and the scent that keeps the lure in the fish's mouth
long enough for a hookset. So, it makes sense to use scents when
the fish need a little extra coaxing or you need a bit more confidence
in a sketchy bite. For soft plastics, I'd consider scents
especially desirable.
Folks fishing plastics make good use of scents, noticing that the bass
hold onto the lure longer, percentages favor the guys who use the
smelly stuff. I really like using the squid flavored 1 oz. squid
from Smelly Jelly. The stuff has the right smell, and it stays
on a bait well. It's a perfect finishing touch on a squid
imitation lure. A lot of guys are also making use of the
baitfish scents in their halibut fishing. Soak a sponge, insert
it up into a hollow-body squid along with your hook and/or weight and
drop her down and out. Lots of ways to use these products beyond
simply spreading on your plastics, but that's a good enough reason to
grab a few of our offerings.
One
of the newer fish attracting products locally is UniButter, a natural
product made as a by product of Catalina Island's sea urchin harvest.
Divers have long known that you could attract the attention of fish by
cracking open a sea urchin. There's a reason these things have spines,
they're not bad to eat. Visit a sushi restaurant, you'll find a sea
urchin sushi on the menu. While it may not be my favorite form of "sush,"
a lot of folks love it, just as the fish do. UniButter is available in
2 ounce containers. Rub it on any artificial lure, soft plastic,
anything that you'd like fish to be attracted to or hang onto. The
stuff works well, and has earned some very good believers. Several of
the guys at our shop use it, and they all say its the best
NEW for 2012 -
BioEdge
Another excellent new scent system is the
BioEdge WAND. The BioEdge product is semi-solid
concentrated extracts from natural baits containing oils, pheromones,
amino acids and enzymes. The Wands are designed like a gluestick, they
stick to all non-absorbent surfaces and stick to 'em without washing
off too quickly. This is similar to a Chapstick tube - well a bit
wider and longer, but you get the idea - it's darn easy to use. The
wand holds enough scent to last a LONG time and it holds up for a year
or so. The scent is applied to any bait, soft plastics, jigs, hard
baits, and it will do it's job for a good 20-30 minutes time. Apply
the scent to dry baits for best results. It's a powerful all natural
scent, made from the real critters themselves. So, Sardine scent is
indeed made from sardines, not a chemical concoction. It's a great way
to mask unwanted scents, and provide a bit more attraction.

Pro-Cure
is another exceptional manufacturer of fish attracting scents.
Pro-Cure is very appealing for a number of reasons. Their products are
less "chemically" treated, made out of the real thing with some
additional flavors and oils. Make use of scent on any hard or
soft bait for added attraction. Fish will indeed hang on longer
and take your lure with more gusto if it tastes natural. With
the addition of fish and bait oils in the mixtures you also benefit
from a nice scent trail.
Consider "curing" your plastics in a baggie
with some of these scents for an hour or so prior to use. You'll
like the results, as will the fish you're seeking. The baby
octopus baits can be quite effective for bottom dwelling fish.
Again, prior to use, take out a couple baits and give 'em a rinse or
shake off the excess packing liquid. Soak them in one of the oil
or sauce scents below for greater effectiveness. The
sauces come in 2 ounce bottles.
