Sumo Tackle

Sumo is another So. Cal. firm that's making waves with their excellent rod belts and lures. They are small but mighty in the world of fishing tackle.  I recently saw first hand just how productive their trolling lures are while on a tuna trip out of San Diego.  Both their Jet Head and Bullet Head lures will produce, consistently.

SUMO
Banana Jigs

We've carried these lures for a long time at our shop, but like a dummy I never offered them via the website. It was a dumb ommission, especially for our East Coast clients who tend to spend some serious time jigging for a wide range of fish, from tuna to grouper. The Banana-style jig is similar to the standard diamond jig, but infinitely more productive in my opinion. Further, these lures are better rigged than the diamond jigs we've been seeing in recent years. These lures have a very good chrome finish, won't flake like some the cheap import stuff. These lures are also made of BRASS, so they will drop more quickly and hold up in tougher fights. They are all rigged with a single hook, and most sizes feature two swivels to help deal with line twist. For guys trying to bring up deeper tuna, these have proven themselves quite productive. They'll take a wide range of fish, and are a very worthwhile addition to a tacklebox.

The model number reflects their weight, eg D4 = 4 ounces...

New Sumo #1 and #3's!

Sumo has brought back two West Coast favorites. The old UFO and Ironman #1 and #3 jigs were a favored small heavy jig, used inshore for barracuda, bonito, bass.... Both feature a rounded front, flattened back for a nice flutter on the drop. The #1 weighs 1.75 ounces, the #3 3.6 ounces. They work well yoyo'd and as a simple cast and retrieve lure.

I've seen some other variants of these two irons, and they simply do not compare. One soft-plastics manufacturer has been trying to sell a Chinese produced version that just plain looks terrible in terms of finish. Sumo earns very high marks for their paint-job and chrome variant jigs. They are very well made, on a par with Tady.

Sumo 7X Light Iron

Sumo recently introduced their popular 7X (larger size) iron in a surface fishing light design. For fishing surface crashing species from barracuda to yellowtail it's a very productive lure. This is one jig iron aficionados have been clamoring for for many years, and now they're here!

Sumo Lumo Iron

SUMOJIG.jpg (58369 bytes)Sumo makes some dandy gear, from their ring hooks to their fighting belts. They entered the "iron" business recently and approached things in a way to make a lot of folks glad.  Their white seabass jigs have a great luminous finish on their backs.  It's not a sticker but a heavy, coated paint job. The luminescence is so darn strong I'd bet a guy could put a couple of these in the pants pockets and forget about getting that vasectomy the misses has been suggesting...

It's an established fact, pinning on a fresh dead, frozen or live squid to a jig like this is effective.  It's a trusted way to hang a big croaker.  Drop the bait down, give it a crank or two up, and stick the rod in the holder.  Darn easy stuff.  You've probably heard the buzz about these things, the lumo finish does indeed improve odds of success.  Grab a couple and give 'em a try.

SUMO HEAVY IRON

After a year's experience with the lumo iron from Sumo, we added some of their other lures to our mix.  I think you'll discover that CharkBait's the place for your iron fix!  We've got the right products from the best manufacturers in the business.  Several of the lures we're now stocking will look familiar to you, with shapes you'll remember from Ironman and Salas.  We've got a great range of colors, and some excellent heavy iron from Sumo.  The paint jobs and construction are first rate, on a level with Tady!

We're stocking three sizes of heavy iron from Sumo, the 7X @ 9 ounces, the 6X @ 7.5 ounces and the Jr. at 4.4 ounces. The Jr. is basically like the old Ironman #5, their most popular chunk of iron.  Ironman is no more.  If anything the finish on the Sumo is superior.  Same tale for the 6 and 7's, Salas eat your heart out! Further, the construction of the Sumo is better. On a recent 10 day trip I saw several of the Salas jigs literally break at the ring and/or hook. We were fishing yellowtail, not huge one's at that (20-30# fish). It might have simply been a batch problem, but the fact that several of the jigs did break made me less confident of the product. Sumo's jigs are made from better quality material, thanks to Tady, their finish is nicer, thanks to Tady. The shape is a familiar standard, based upon the Old Ironman and Salas design (which were based upon previous manufacturers products, too). I'm not trying to bad-rap these other manufacturers. But, really, Tady makes the best iron and in the case of Sumo they are the marketing end of things. The fellow that owns Sumo is no dummy, he went with proven designs, and went to the top manufacturer in the business to make the jigs he sells. Sumo iron is a quality product, and something deserving of taking some room in your tackle box. They will catch you some fish!

sumo12.jpg (18647 bytes)Trolling Lures

sumo17.jpg (21425 bytes)Sumo offers two styles of trolling lures, a bullet head and jet head.  The bullet head designs offer a pair of beady red eyes, quality skirts, and heavy chrome heads.  They troll fast and stay down.  The concave jet head M10C, M16C and M20C produce more bubbles and commotion.  Both styles work, both belong in your tuna arsenal.  It's about that simple.

The small M10 and M14 can really produce well when the fish are feeding on smaller baits.  That was sure the case early last season, and will follow suit this season.  Albacore are notorious for biting better on smaller baits and lures.  I've seen yellowfin behave the same way.  So, this may be one of those times when you can't get away just buying one lure.  The image to the left shows the difference between the two head designs, with the insert showing off the jets.

For 2003 we're adding two new chugger-jet style lures from Sumo, the M10C and the M20C.  The little M10 is going to be a terrific lure for fish feeding on smaller baits.  Early season albacore are going to jump all over this little lure.  For yellowfin the larger M20 will knock 'em cold.  We also added a few new patterns, the Coco will be much favored locally and down south.  The Blue Dorado (also known as Abortion) has been a long favored local hue, and of course a big winner in South Florida.

Tackle Belts

sumo5.jpg (27101 bytes)Sumo Tackle's Ninja Belt is a very good design.  It's also the best value on the market in terms of a quality medium tackle belt.  The aluminum belt features excellent padding, I mean excellent.  The bright finish of the blue or gold aluminum is great looking and tough.  The gimbal will accommodate all rods withsumo2.jpg (9352 bytes) gimbals or not, unlike at least one very popular competitor's similarly sized piece.  The Ninja will impress you, I'm sure of that.  It's a great belt, very comfortable in use, and excellent long term durability.
