Catchy Tackle

Catchy is another So. Cal. firm that's making waves with their excellent lures. They are similar to Accurate, manufacturing aerospace products for five generations.  The owners have a strong interest in fishing, kept feeling they could do something better with their know-how.  Well, they knew how, and did!

 

 

 

New Catchy Wahoo Bombs!

Catchy Tackle has introduced a NEW wahoo bomb, and we've got 'em first! The new bomb weighs in at 4 ounces and comes rigged on wire cable  with a single hook (the preference for dealing with wahoo). The bombs also have a nice willow leaf spinner blade attached to a swivel on the hook for added attraction, and a Keeper above the jig to keep it from sliding up the line too far from the hook (a very good idea since the lure will tend to ride up the line after a cast as you let it descend a bit prior to ripping it back to the boat.

 

There are three variations to the lures. The standard chrome head version features a double skirt of flashy material. The Gold head and the Black Chrome head also feature an internal Newell Skirt. The Newell skirts are heavier, thicker, more durable and make the lure have a fuller presence when quickly retrieved. These bombs are going to be effective, and quite popular. Catchy did their homework prior to manufacture. The heads are typical Catchy quality, meaning EXCELLENT and DURABLE. Unlike the offshore produced stuff, these are well made and precision manufactured. The chrome platting is all much better and will prove much more durable. The Gold and Black Chrome heads are flawless and will prove well worth the money.

Trolling Lures

These lures are something to get excited about.   I sure did, but I didn't add them to our inventory until I started hearing from friends.  Tim Chen was the first guy to mention the lure to me.  He had great success with their wahoo lures on a 10 day trip a few years ago.  (He was also kind enough to drop some of the wahoo over to my place after his trip.) Tim, caught far more than his share, casting the lure forever on a Seeker 6470 with a Newell 533.  Between the flash and bubble trail produced by the spinner, the lures were HOT! 

Then, I started hearing about the lures from the folks targeting tuna.  I know of one boat that wouldn't let their passengers use the product on their trolling rotations.  (Party boats don't want one lure to get all the attention on a rotation.   I wrote about that private boat contrast on my Last Trip report this summer.)   That was all I needed to hear to realize I needed to find the $ to bring in the line. These things will get some attention.

 

catchy4.jpg (367072 bytes)The Catchy Spinner Jets and Bombs feature an inline spinner, on ball bearings front and rear.  The lures are well put together, call it overkill. They are made of a chrome plated brass, stainless balls for the bearings. They are available in several weight and size configurations.  That's great if you're trying to take advantage of faster trolling, or working a bit more of the water column.  Maintenance is easy, just flush and go. The lures also have some excellent Sevenstrand skirts to complete the product, and they're the right patterns too.  The lure will produce on a wide cathead.jpg (7678 bytes)variety of gamefish. Tuna, marlin, makos, dorado and of course wahoo will eagerly jump on the bait.  Additionally, with the commotion these things create, they'll also attract attention to other lures in your spread or use as a teaser to attract a marlin to a drop back bait.  At this point, the lure's a proven commodity.  They work. Spinner Bombs - Wahoo

Same design, different skirts.  For the 'hoo, Catchy offers two lures, which can be used casting or trolling.  Their best use is as a casting bomb, I think.  If you're going long range, stick a few of these in your tackle bag.  From $19-20, it's a good value, and a productive lure.  Also, if you are targeting the big hoo, you might also consider using their larger marlin size lures.  The 16 and 26 oz. product rigged appropriately, is proving it's worth on the long range boats visiting points south.

Big Game, Very Big Game - Marlin, BIG Wahoo...

The biggest Catchy's offer a unique spinner design, they also offer an excellent premium skirt material too.  These big game spinner blade lures feature Newell Skirts, a heavier material for longer lived use when inhaled and chomped by the big boys. The largest 16 ounce lures from the Spinner Jet series are also designed for big gamefish, and use first rate Sevenstrand skirts. But, these guys are something even more extreme as you can see.  The biggest Magnums are large, at a good 26 ounces. The picture shows two different designs, a concave head on the three left ones, a bullet head on the lure to the right.  The new head option (concave slant) is made for slower trolling while the bullet head lives on speed.  It will prove an effective lure from 6 up to 12 knots.  By contrast the slant is better suited to 3-5 knots.  In that application the slant/concave head magnums will swing, dive, pop up, do all sorts of things to draw attention to themselves.  But, they should not be used at the faster speed the bullet head is intended.  Both lures produce a big bubble trail, churning up the water with their blades.  They work great as a teaser, or can be rigged for direct strikes for the big boys.  It's a unique product, with excellent fishability, effective on a wide variety of gamefish. @$54.95
