Daiwa has released their new top of the line Saltiga spinners and we have received a couple of pieces, and the larger sizes are now available.

They feature a big departure and redesign from the older generation. The have shifted away from the “Zaion” composite body and rotor for a much stronger aluminum construction. The new reels weigh a bit more than the old ones in the same sizes, but that weight doesn’t detract from the feel. These are as good as it gets as far as handle feel and quality. Because of the change to aluminum you won’t see any more complains about rotor flex during high drag use, and also why the smaller sizes have much more drag than the older generation. Another thing they addressed is the drag adjustment knob, the new one is all aluminum which keeps it from expanding and causing changes in drag pressure.

They have continued on with the MONOCOQUE frame design which cuts down on unnecessary weight and allows for much larger gear sizes to be used despite their smaller overall size. With a main gear up to 15% larger the difference in power will be easily noticeable. The spool has been redesigned a bit to feature a more pronounced rim, which should improve casting distance, along with a hardened spool rim that will ensure less friction on the line. Another small thing to note is that the clicker has been upgraded significantly so if a fish is pulling drag you will definitely know it.

Overall these reels a big improvement in all categories, they’re a much more durable and reliable reel to fish with now and the new body allows for even better water resistance which should keep them feeling buttery smooth for years to come.

From the Manufacturer:

The best in class reels: If you are looking for the finest spinning reel made, look no further than Daiwa’s Saltiga. They are uniquely strong and capable, with technology other firms simply have not the ability to duplicate. These reels are made for fishing tuna, amberjacks, yellowtail, GT’s… anything that fights back and justifies this type of performance. The reels feature a sealed spool system, protecting all internal components, protecting the drag washers, protecting the bearings.  Simply put, they’re the most advanced spinning reels made today. Saltiga reels are made in Japan, by craftsmen who care about building exceptional fishing instruments.

Since the first Saltiga was released in 2002, the demand for heavy-duty saltwater spinning reels has constantly increased. The original Saltiga set a new standard for this category and has continually evolved throughout its eighteen-year history. Now, in 2020 Saltiga is re-imagined delivering anglers the most technologically advanced Saltiga ever produced. Extensively redesigned and engineered from drag knob to handle the 20 Saltiga features the most advanced list of features ever, to once again affirm itself as the ultimate saltwater spinning reel. At the heart of the re-design is the brand new Monocoque body. A single piece body capable of holding much larger internal gearing components is machined from high-strength aluminum to provide unheralded strength and improved sealing. Housed within the MQ body, is a brand-new drive gear, providing gear strength more than double that of its predecessor. The new MQ body also boasts a new rear cover design, eliminating screws from the underside of the reel to improve against intrusion, the cover is also produced from reinforced ABS to eliminate potential electrolysis with the aluminum body. Improved paint & finishing processes also extend the durability to the cosmetic side, delivering much improved corrosion protection. Our engineers created a new drag stack, increasing the number of washers to deliver ten times the drag durability compared to the previous model Saltiga. A newly designed aluminum heat dissipating Drag Knob delivers improved cooling & heat dissipation. A newly designed ABS Longcast spool design offers improved casting performance and enhanced line management.
Magsealed reels utilize Daiwa’s patented technology to apply magnetic oil that can change density and shape when a magnetic field is added. When Magseal technology is applied to the main shaft and/or line roller of a spinning reel, it produces a low-friction seal that keeps water, dust and grit from encountering the internal components of the reel. The result is a watertight seal with much lower resistance than rubber type seals.
ATD (Advanced Tournament Drag) is the latest drag technology introduced to drag systems. ATD implements structural changes to the spool metal of the reel that provides greater support of the spool across the entire length of the main shaft. This additional support of the spool reduces spool twist under load, promotes more even pressure on the drag washers and ultimately reduces “pulsing” of the drag when fighting the fish. Implementing a high density woven carbon, impregnated with specially designed grease, the combination creates a smooth and fluid drag across all levels of pressure.
A maximized core diameter and reversed taper mean 100% useable line, with no more “dead” line buried in a deep core. You can fill it with line right up to the edge of the spool lip without fear of tangles. The ABS reverse tapered design causes less casting friction for longer and easier casting.
