It’s a  tiny, powerful, variation on the Avet theme of leverdrag and super freespooling spins.  This is one sweet 12-20# reel, a giant killer if there ever was one. The new SX is unique in terms of power and size. If you liked Shimano’s discontinued cult classic, the TLD5, you’re going to fall in love with the new Avet. It’s a small piece of machine shop perfection.

We’ve been playing with these new reels a lot since they came into our inventory almost six years ago.  We like ’em.  Tom at the shop loves his, probably takes it to bed with him every night. (I’ll have to ask his wife about that one…) Something so small, so strong and capable, and it’s got a good feel about it.  I think Avet got it right, again.

Extended Use Report:  The machining is first rate, the drags are powerful, and the half dozen ball bearings sure make the thing spin. The reels use open bearings, meaning you can lubricate them, clean them, make them last years with a little maintenance.  Being such a small reel, as drag is increased the handle requires a bit more pressure in turning.  This is not noticeable when a fish is on, but it’s a little different from many other reels. This also seems to reduce over time, with use.  This little reel can produce a lot more drag than you’d think for its size, so the slight difference in handle feel is to be expected. Corrosion issues have not cropped up, client response has been very positive.

Avet upgraded their styling since the original introduction of the SX. The piece was first produced in 2002. In 2004 Avet updated SX, with a more “refined” version with slightly rounded sideplates (later duplicated on all Avets). They upgraded the handle on the SX 2006/7, smoothed out the “feel” and also added a round soft grip  knob. In 2008 Avet changed the gearing to 5.3:1. The reel is much more refined now with a silent retrieve, truly a precision instrument that’s small, strong and capable of dealing with fish far larger than you’d normally consider with a reel of this diminutive stature.
