As the slow pitch jigging scene has been growing in the US over the last few years the price of entry has decreased by a long shot, so it is great to continue seeing better value alternatives to the higher end rods with a higher price tag.  At $199 these rods are very hard to beat, they give you pretty much everything you need to get a good start without breaking the bank. These rods all use Fuji K-Concept guides which are very popular due to their low weight, corrosion resistance, and overall design making them the standard across most slow pitch rods. They vary in weight from 4.5 oz all the way up to a back breaking 5.25 oz on the XH model, needless to say making them perfect for jigging all day due to their ultralight weight. They feature Fuji graphite trigger reel seats, and a longer rear grip length to accommodate for underarm fishing when you’re hooked up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOverall these are awesome rods that will be the perfect start for those interested in trying out slow pitch jigging, it’s a very productive technique that takes less effort than speed jigging but still gives you an involved and active fishing experience. I would look to pair these with the Daiwa Saltist 15, Saltiga 10\/15\/35 Star Drags or go with one of the newer Saltiga Lever Drag 15\/35JH. They did their homework, studied some of our CA produced state of the art rods, actions, etc. The result of doing the homework was the creation of some excellent rods which offer significant benefit to fishermen. Before going into specifics, let’s talk a bit about Daiwa. Daiwa is a 50 year old firm specializing in fishing (with a golf background too since rod making technology is also used to produce golf clubs). Daiwa owns their own factories, they are not buying rods built by a third party. They have control over what’s built, and they have responsibility for the consequences of not doing things right. Daiwa is the most traditional of Japanese manufacturers, and that’s a good thing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"Apple-style-span\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFor our West Coast style fishing (with broad appeal in other regions) typically for rods in the $200 range we’d be looking at fiberglass. Fiberglass is darn good, it’s durable, but it’s heavy when compared to other more modern materials. An all graphite rod has earned a bad reputation by comparison to fiberglass when it comes to durability. That’s not a function of the material, it’s a function of the way it’s used. United Composites (GUSA) demonstrated that an all graphite rod was equal to or better than ‘glass in terms of strength and durability – but that was the result of changing the way rods are laid up – using the material differently.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"Apple-style-span\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFishermen have evolved along with the equipment we use. The use of braid has allowed us to fish smaller gear, with greater drag capability than in years past. With the smaller, lighter reels, we’re looking for rods that have high strength but weigh less and have a thinner diameter. Balance is better, ease of use improves, call it ergonomics or just comfort, we fishermen are looking for different rods than we did a decade ago – or at least we should be.  Frankly, I see Okuma’s and Daiwa’s rods as filling the arena which our fiberglass rods formerly covered, with more modern designs and construction methods.  I mentioned that Daiwa did their homework, one look at the Proteus rods confirms that, and once you pick up one of the rods you immediately note that we’re not playing with old school fiberglass…ah but we’re still benefiting from some ‘glass since these rods are our preferred composite build. Light weight, durable performance, thinner diameters, nicer action for use with braid, excellent components all combine to make the Proteus series rods something I really should have brought into our inventory a year earlier. There were some reasons for that decision, but the positive is that we’ve now brought in the line and it augments our range of rods significantly. Daiwa did a great job in designing the Proteus series rods. These are some excellent rods, well worth their price, and a serious upgrade from the typical $200 fiberglass rod. You are getting a great deal of state of the art technology in rod construction, that’s simply not available in a fiberglass rod.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"Apple-style-span\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhen I mention modern rod designs, Daiwa gets the nod. They’ve been listening and learning, and applying new methods which result in better products for consumer. Cosmetically the rods feature thinner diameter blanks (in comparison to fiberglass) and they have greater hoop strength given their blank design. They aren’t exactly United Composites in terms of their design execution, but they are darn close and with Daiwa’s backing you have long term security. For a series of rods which run about $200, I’m of the belief that the days of the fiberglass rod may be over. The Proteus rods are made from graphite and ‘glass, they’re a composite rod (like UC’s CE and CP series, Calstar’s Grafighter, Seeker’s old Black Steel and other series). The durability of fiberglass can be matched by carbon fiber when the construction methods evolve away from the same old methods or building rod blanks. UC got that right (or should I say the former Grahpite USA nailed it). Daiwa applies some similar design features with their new Daiwa’s Proteus series rods – they’re a composite too. Proteus rods may have been made with the West Coast angler in mind, but the’re also exactly what a lot of other folks are going to appreciate, too. There is a special emphasis towards deep water jigging which will maximize the performance that these rods can put out with the extra resistance at depth. Make sure to pair these rods with tall narrow reels to get the best feel and make use of the smaller guides that will help the line guide itself back on the reel. I’d highly recommend at least the Accurate Valiant 500N SPJ if not the 600NN on the bigger sizes. The R is a bit different from the rest since it is now available in a spinning configuration for the guys more comfortable with fixed spool reels, with that change comes a stiffer rod bend which gives you more pulling power. The bend is very similar to the S series, although the equivalent ratings in the R feel like they have a bit more recoil. These rods also feature Fuji KW Stainless guides so they are significantly less expensive than the other Slow Jigging III rods that feature titanium sets. You can save some money on the rod and put the savings towards a nicer reel since you’ll need it to be able to maximize the potential and pulling power of these rods. The heaviest 800g model is rated for nearly 50lbs of drag at 60 degrees which will put any fixed spool reel to the test, if not the angler as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe stiffer bend makes them more usable for a hybrid approach of slow pitch or high speed jigging meaning you can get a combo that will do both well. For a high speed jigging style drop the jig rating down 40% and you should fall right into the range that each rod is capable of fishing well. These rods will be able to work the larger jigs and still give you the pulling power to fish well over 30lbs of drag. Vertical jigs have been a great way to catch the bluefin in California going back over 8 years now, the style continuously evolving each year to what we have today which is primarily longer slimmer 300-500g jigs that drop quick. While we’ve had plenty of success fishing any kind of bigger reel and rail rod setup, the traditional jigging style has still been shown to be more effective for getting the bite especially when fishing during the day. These are short and parabolic rods that give the jigs a lot more action even at depth, they’re thinner and lighter making them a lot more comfortable to fish with and yet they’re capable of fishing the same drag loads without issue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese aren’t rods designed to be left on the rail, you’ll need to pump and wind to fight the fish but at 6’2″ with a parabolic action it is a whole lot easier to take the heavier drag force on one of these compared to a 8′ fast action rod. We’d recommend pairing these with a lighter frame tall narrow reel to eliminate the issue of guiding the line and to avoid the extra weight of a heavier frame reel. The Accurate Valiant 600N\/800N, Okuma Alijos 16, Penn Fathom II 40N and Daiwa Saltiga 55 are all great options for a rod like this for the guys that want to give speed jigging a try.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe conventional model places the reel seat a bit higher than the spinning since for jigging with a conventional reel it is typically better to keep the rod butt under your armpit which requires a bit more space. Very nice jigging rods, and the price is exceptional if you’ve been looking at some of the niche players in this game. The Hawaiian “optimization” came from input from the guys at the islands who wanted a bit more leverage from their jigging rods. So, Okuma made the rods a tad longer and beefed up the handle area’s stiffness. You won’t find these rods bending thru the handle area like your typical Japanese style jigging rods which have little to no backbone – reminiscent of the old Kalen noodle sticks. The action is right on, and having a bit more control thru the handle section inspires confidence when you’re on a larger fish. The next step up once you get to the 30-60lb line classes you have an upgraded Fuji DPSH heavy duty graphite seat which is great for the mid range line classes before an aluminum reel seat is needed. And finally on the classes meant for fishing 60lb+ you’ll get a Seaguide Aluminum reel seat which provides all of the durability you’d need in the heavier tests. The heavier rods also feature Fuji HB guide frames which are as strong as a ring guide can get, these also feature the SiC inserts which are a further upgrade. The lighter 80MH model is rated 30-60lb and we think it will fish every bit of that, the tip is light enough to cast smaller jigs and lures while the backbone gives you enough pulling power to bring in some bigger fish. Randy added a couple new wrinkles to the patterns once he arrived on scene. These are composite designs incorporating a lot of material given their intended application. Dual Helix carbon fiber build, longitudinally oriented Fiberglass, heavy Fuji triple footed guides, 3M rail pad over the grip (protection plus non-slip feature), triple wrapped, etc. All come with gimbals and cap.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Rail Rods are based upon the CP designs. These beefy sticks make use of 7 to 9 patterns in their build – like the CP’s they make use of three types of carbon fiber as well as  longitudinally oriented fiberglass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e7 and 7 1\/2 foot length, it wasn’t long ago that we considered anything longer than 6 feet impractical for cow fishing. But times have changed and rod designs have progressed.  The length is related to the manner of fishing, use of the rail as a fulcrum.  In general, while a longer rod usually has better casting properties for distance, that’s not the rational for these rods. They are made to fish the rail, especially as you get into the vertical game on a big fish.  The longer rods are more suited to the bigger boats, boats with wider rails like the Excel, RP and Rooster. The shorter 7 footers will load up better on the smaller boats, like the American Angler.  Having said that, there’s another distinction between the two lengths, the longer rods have more material in ’em, the butts are larger diameter which requires more material in their build.  The 7 1\/2 footers can fish the heavier recommended lines, while the 7 footers will load up better at the lighter drag settings. For example a Raptor at 7 feet does best at 60# and 20-22 lbs of drag while the 7 1\/2 footer will fish 80# with say 24-25 lbs drag. You have a bit more leverage in a standoff at distance with the shorter rod, and more lift at vertical on a bigger boat with the longer rod.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe new UC Rail Rods are quite frankly the best in the business, made by the guy that came up with the original concept while working for another USA rod making firm. The guides are Fuji’s strongest, made as a rail rod should be, with some protection on the foregrip – in this case 3M’s product which is darn expensive and effective (far better than XWrap or a slippery plastic material). Reel seat is from ALPS with dual lockdown for added security. The rods are especially great for trolling with more braid and less leader which has grown in popularity recently. The braid doesn’t have much stretch so you need the rod to absorb more of the shock, and a lower drag level would be appropriate when trolling this way. The CP series rods make use of upgraded carbon fiber, again used in the proprietary dual helix form, AND uni-directional fiberglass. The rod transitions to ‘glass at the tip. These rods are not nearly as light as the US and Elite series – they are more like a fiberglass Calstar in terms of weight – but they are strong, hard pulling, high use and abuse fishing rods. The blanks are the strongest made in my opinion, nothing else on the market like them in terms of design and inherent strength given the production materials and design. For light weight, go Elite – no doubt about that. But for the most demanding conditions the CP’s are the best in the business in terms of lifting power and overall strength. These rods are also a bit “faster” in terms of their bend. The Elite’s offer a bit more parabolic action, and that’s great for many applications and most fishermen. The CP’s are faster, put a bit more power in your hands and more control of the fish on the other end of your line, too. For the experienced angler who really likes to leverage a fish, the actions of these rods will be helpful in accomplishing greater control, but you will be a greater part of the fight since your strength comes more into play. That’s one aspect of a faster action rod to consider.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThese are for the hard pullers out there, faster action (meaning you get good flex at the tip and then the rods shut off earlier than the US or CE series). The original GUSA series designed rods, DUAL HELIX build, no fiberglass. A bit faster in action than the Challenger Elite series. The GUSA series rods include some old and new favorites like the Tilefish, Predator, Monster, etc. In basic terms, the US series offers four carbon patterns in the build, dual helix times two for a four ply rod. The carbon fiber used to build the GUSA series rods is twice the strength (almost double the GSM, grams per square inch) of the carbon used on other rods like Seeker and Calstar, nearly double the amount of carbon fiber in the material used. That provides much faster recoil than a Grafighter, energy is loaded up and released faster, and the rods are stronger with far greater hoop strength (which is the weak point on any rod under compression or a load). Much like Calstar’s design progressed rod performance beyond fiberglass in the late 1990’s, so too does the manner in which UC’s rods are built and the material used in their production significantly improves performance for fishermen today. These are wonderful rods to own and fish for decades to come. In my own collection, the CP series and the GUSA series are very well represented, and my favorites to fish. Again, twice Dual Helix in the four ply builds – these are exceptionally strong, hard pulling rods.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNext, the cosmetics… Pictures never do justice to a rod, and these images don’t come close to showing off how attractive they are. You’ve never held such a light rod and you’ve never seen such a beautiful piece of rod building expertise. I’ve got to say, Randy at UC has an eye for the cosmetics and he pulled out all the stops. The metallic copper wraps, copper reel hood, the unique guide-set used with copper colored braid safe insert, finishing ring… simply beautiful rods. Oh, and did I mention their weight… OMG!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the present time these new rods are all made for conventional reels. We’re encouraging UC to make them in spinning version, too.  These rods are all 7 feet 9 inches in length. The US79XF and 79F are blanks that those familiar with GUSA will remember, like the 711’s they were very well thought of blanks. This helps a lot since you won’t have to baby the rods as much as ones with single foot micro running guides.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eGoing into more detail of the ratings of each rod I’d say the jig size is a bit light for how the rods feel and the braid ratings are not that useful for slow jigging. I would not go above 30lb or 40lb braid on any of these models, anything thicker than that and you’ll have a significantly worse experience trying to jig while staying vertical, certainly nothing close to the 50-80lb rating of the H model. The jig ratings are a bit under-estimated, the ML model feels a lot nicer in the 150-220g range since it has a good amount of recoil and certainly would not work a 60g jig well in a slow pitch style. The M feels closer to 200-250g and the other heavier models we have not gotten our hands on yet. There are scenarios where lighter jigs will work on these rods, just not in a slow pitch style. In Japan light jigging and super light jigging (LJ \u0026amp; SLJ) are very popular styles that require rods with a bit more recoil.
