For
2008 Penn introduced a new series of rods specifically made for jigging.
These rods are of graphite construction, all feature an enlarged trigger
grip and are extremely light weight. They're made for a long day's fishing
with rod and reel in hand. The blanks are made in China, and while this
source certainly isn't up to Seeker or Calstar standards, Penn has indeed
secured a darn good rod that's well made with high quality components and
Penn's legendary warranty policy of customer satisfaction. Unlike some
manufacturers, not to name names but I think their initials are shimano,
Penn passes along manufacturing savings in the form of realistic prices.
The rods are VERY well priced at $99! And, their actions are
right-on-the-money in terms of what's needed to set a hook and lift a fish
- again, unlike the other not-so-nameless manufacturer.
Action:
these rods are stout, quite a departure from some of the "noodle-sticks"
offered by that nameless manufacturer previously mentioned for use
in a similar style of fishing. They have some serious backbone and lift.
You'll immediately notice that when you pull on the rod, they can put a
hurt on a fish and pull a grouper from it's hole. The rods feature a
triangular shaped grip which you'll find very comfortable in your hands,
and coupled with the light weight of the rods you'll end up enjoying
having 'em in your hands.
For 2010 Penn's expanded this series of rods to
include some excellent casting rods from 6 1/2' to 7' length and rated
from 12 on up to 40# application. The new rods are similarly produced,
with a triangular grip, thin diameter blank, and more conventional style
reel seat.
Our opinion: I am a Calstar and Seeker supporter.
In my opinion, those are the very best rods manufactured. But, I will give
these new Torque rods a nod. They are nice sticks and are priced
realistically. Penn could have played the game some other folks do and put
on a fictitious retail of $200+ for these rods. They didn't. They priced
them fairly, heck I'd say they priced them darn aggressively given the
quality of components and action. They are a rod I wouldn't mind fishing,
and that's not something I'd say about any other rod made in China. For
$99 to $149, I think these rods are nothing short of tremendous.
