LEAD Fishing and Downrigger Weights

We came across a new product that's an alternative to the traditional lead we use, and offers some flexibility in application that you may find quite interesting...and very worthwhile. Quick-Release Sinkers are lead free and made in the USA. Like a few other firms involved in fishing tackle, the primary business of maker of the weight system has a machining firm. He's also a fisherman. He saw the benefit of having the flexibility to quickly change the weight used on a bottom rig. Differing condition, current, depth, all demand differing amounts of weight...if you intend to get your offering down to where the targeted fish live. If you're going to fish for bottom scratchers, you'd better plan on actually getting to the bottom!

Quick-Release weights use a "Plunger" to attach to the weight "Receiver" that's made from stainless steel. The receivers fit the plungers snuggly, yet they can be separated with a bit of pressure. If you look closely at the receivers/weights pictured below you can see the o-ring which allows for the retention of the plunger within the weight, and provides for the release upon reasonable pressure. There are two sizes of plungers stocked, the smaller sold in units of three and the larger size packed in twos. The small plunger will fit receivers/weights from 1 up to 16 ounces. The larger plunger fits a different group of weigths, from 8 up to 30 ounces. If you are doing some dropper loop fishing, this is a great way to go. Quick-Release weights are made to detach, so if you get hung-up on the bottom you can break free. You're less likely to get hung up given their shape, but if you do, you'll most likely get back your plunger as well as the rest of your rig. If the conditions change or you move to an area of different depth, you can simply change weights and leave the rest of your rig alone - saving time and hassle. Hmm, you can also travel on the water without worrying that an improperly stored rod/reel/terminal-rig with weight flying around and cracking your gelcoat or breaking windows...you can simply detach the weight. Good concept, very good execution and pretty darn trick device that offers a great deal of flexibility. Add to all this, it's a lead free product, and constructed of quality materials.

We've been getting requests for luminescent eggs and torpedo sinkers for a few years. For making your own small tuna lures, a great early season albacore favorite is as simple as picking a 4.5" octopus skirt, run 50# mono through it and one of these hoochie-heads.  Tie on a 5/0 double tuna hook or 5/0 or 6/0 single Siwash hook and you're ready to catch some albacore tuna.

A lot of guys like drop-shotting the smaller Gulp and Reaction Strike or BassTrix lures. It's a particularly effective technique for inshore fish, freshwater and saltwater, and allows the lure to be presented in a very natural form. To aid in this style of presentation we have secured some excellent quality specialty weights that feature an eye that also has a narrow taper at the top to allow you to pinch the line at a fixed distance from the lure. These are the nicest dropshot weights I've come across and will be a real blessing for folks fishing the surf.

DOWNRIGGER WEIGHTS

Well, having said how much I like the Z-Wings, now here's the alternative.  If you slow troll, there's not a functional difference between a standard cannon ball and a Z-Wing, it's as you increase speed that blow-back becomes an issue.  We offer three downrigger weights in the standard cannon ball configuration, 8#, 10#, 12#.  The weights are also coated.   Another way to get around the blow-back problem is to use more weight, and slim down the surface area of the cannon ball.  That's the Master Slicer, a pancake shaped 13# hunk of lead, coated, and finned for better tracking.  If you're going to go with a standard weight, these are the best product out there.  I know, I've been looking for the right supplier for some time now.

The Carolina Keeper -

Here's a fairly new product, replacing split shot for holding your egg sinker above the hook, and finding a lot of others uses as well.  Place your fishing line through an egg sinker, then use your needle nose to squeeze the Carolina Keeper and a slit will open up for you to insert your line.  Adjust the Keeper, to the desired distance above your hook and you're done. The sinker will stay up there were you put it.  It's easy to use, gentle on the line, and effective.  (The picture shows a keeper on the line.) Each pack holds several of the Keepers, enough for many day's fishing, or if you're lucky even less. Guys fishing bait will find them very useful, better than lead, more secure, darn hard to see, too.  But, there are also other uses like rigging dropper loops with less chance of breaking your line, hoochies...  You'll find these guys very useful little gizmos.
