The Ultimate Jigging Rod

NEW 2012 MODELS ADDED!

Seeker has a new series of rods which we're proud to be introducing to our clients, the Hercules. This series of blanks represents a  combination of innovative design and experience, producing a superb line of rods with a specific application in mind, vertical jigging. Having said that, they're no single use rod, and they'll find much wider application than jigging. Some of the technology employed first reached fishermen by way of the Super Seeker rods which made great use of S-Glass and graphite in producing the most powerful blanks on the market. The Hercules blanks are constructed the same as the Super Seeker, but with a thinner outside diameter - skinnier - but with the same sort of power and durability.

The Rods feature Virtus Ring Lock Guides, made from 100% Solid Titanium Alloy Frames - They're ultra light in weight, with nanolite ceramic inserts and with the ring lock frame system to virtually eliminate ring loss issues. So, the guides are safe for Spectra use, durable for long term performance, corrosion proof and very light in overall weight. These features all work in concert with the new thin, light and super strong blanks to produce an amazing rod, unlike anything you've fished before.

These new rods have that unparalleled strength, but also lighter weight and thinner diameter, resulting in a rod of very light weight, high durability and superior overall strength. With the rod building input of Billy Vivona and the rod production expertise of Randy Penny of Seeker, these new rods offer more strength, lighter weight and greater capability than any "jigging" rods ever produced. That's a broad statement, but in this case it is indeed a valid conclusion.

For 2012 Seeker expanded their line of Hercules rods, and the introductions immediately found success with yellowfin tuna over 280# being taken on the 70XH. One point I need to reinforce with folks, you'll note the heavier spinning rods are more expensive than their conventional counterparts. Please understand, the guides used are solid titanium! That first guide on an 80H for instance carries a cost of over $60! But, on the other hand other rods that use the same sort of guides run in the neighborhood of $1200.

Having said all this, let me add a couple cents more. The Hercules rods remind me a lot of United Composite's Dual Helix - formerly known a Graphite USA - rods in terms of weight, diameter and initial feel in the hands. That's a good thing, and preferable for a jigging application...and more. But, with further playing around, they have a MUCH different action than the old GUSA's. The Hercules are more parabolic in bend, verses the fast or extremely fast action of the United Composite Dual Helix's. This action is pretty dependent upon the fisherman. The more parabolic action is what you more often see from some offshore manufacturers for the vertical jigging application with Spectra lines. The greater bend overall can act as a bit of a shock absorber given the non-stretch nature of the new braids. However, some fishermen prefer the greater lift and hook set ability of the faster action rods [meaning these rods flex more at the tip section (1/4-1/3 from the tip) and then "shut-off" for more direct leverage]. This is an open debate, no right or wrong answer, can't say one action is better or worse for a jigging application. It's a matter of personal preference, and there are good arguments for both styles. For myself, when going after fish under 50#'s or so,  I prefer a fast action rod for use with iron. If however I'm hooked up with something more substantial, the parabolic rod is much more comfortable while fighting a fish. Without doubt, both options mentioned, and certainly these Hercules rods represent something significantly better than the limp noodle-sticks that some nameless bike company keeps bringing over from China. Those things have no lift, may be fine for a 2# rockfish but woefully inadequate for much else. That's my take, for what it's worth. 2/24/10 .

CharkStraps & CharkWraps

Two new items from us, not necessarily the most creative or revolutionary products we've ever come up with, but nonetheless they are useful and they are a bit different than what's available from others.

Our RodWraps are an upgrade from the StickJackets we've carried for several years. We've made ours a bit larger in diameter so that they will accommodate larger saltwater guides, even larger spinning guides. The StickJackets were really made for freshwater use, sized accordingly but we used their spinning models for our application. Now we've got 'em made our way. We've reinforced the top with a leatherette end piece and metal grommet which can be used to hang rods, and we've increased the diameter to allow your rods, even those using larger AFTCO wind-on roller guides or larger size spinning guides to fit. The Wraps are about 5 feet in length, will extend down the rod into the handle material of most rods. They are not made to cover the entire rod, only that portion it's designed to protect - the blank, the finish, the guides.

These wraps are all that I've been using now for the past few years. I like the fact that I can use them for storage protection, travel protection as well as leave 'em on my rods on the boat. They are breathable and they don't absorb moisture. So, they help me protect my rods when they're bundled up once the fishing is over. On most long range trips out of San Diego, you move your rods onto the boat and off the boat all bundled up. They may stay that way overnight on the boat as well. For a cloth sock, that's no good. So, you can write off any protection of the rod under these conditions, and rods do get grouped, compressed, bounced around while stored on the upper deck and in handling at the end of a trip. So, when it's time to "take down your gear" on a long range trip for bundling and storage on the top deck during travel and boat cleaning, I'll put my rods in the Jacket individually and in a pinch two in the same sleeve. That's helped me protect my rods, their guides, and keep things organized and together at the end of the trip. With these things you do get that protection when you need it most. I even leave them on my rods when I get home and put my fishing rods away for storage. I'll spray off the rod jackets while still on the rod, loosening any accumulated saltwater in the process. Then I'll take off the wraps, clean the rods more thoroughly and allow them to dry. Use of a cleaner like Penn's Rod and Reel cleaner for that, and you've got things in great shape for your next trip and your gear will stay in new condition. The Wraps are five feet in length.

The other product we have for rod organization are our CharkStraps. These are great for bundling your rods together for transport or storage. You can secure up to a half dozen rods with these things. Nice thing about ours verses some others, they are made from a softer foam/rubber material so they'll never scratch up your rods. Unlike some similar products I've seen, we made it a point to include three different sizes (which makes sense since you'll use all three at different positions on your bundled rods from the tip to near the reel seat). So, you get three straps, all with Velcro through their length to handle most any size bundle of rods you'll be totting, from 2 to 6 or more rods.
