CharkBait stocking Okuma rods? We never have before 2009 simply because they never fit into our mix, didn't match our ideas of what a quality saltwater rod should be. But, with recent changes in this firm's orientation and product development we've seen some innovative products that truly represent positive advancements in design. There are certain products Okuma manufactures that fill niche applications very well, and represent things worth owning. In my mind, their travel rods are the prime example. Never have we seen a nicer moderate duty saltwater travel rod. There's nothing available that comes close to what these rods can accomplish for the globe trotting angler. Same sort of tale with the Kayak rods, darn good ideas! Pricing for what's offered by this manufacturer is very reasonable. Much as some of Okuma's reels now meet the demands of serious saltwater anglers, so too for several of the rods these folks manufacture.

All rods featured here have a LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY FROM OKUMA!

Okuma PCH Rods
2017 Product Introduction
Now in Stock!

I've got to give Okuma a lot of credit, it's been fun watching them develop and grow. It's my feeling that they got spanked so hard a decade ago that they learned a most important lesson, they listen.  No doubt they innovate, too. But, key for them has been listening and then coming to market with things we've (collectively) asked for.

"Our customers are the source of our most valuable input and it’s your needs, goals and desires that drive Okuma product development.” That's their philosophical statement, and I do believe it's followed as evidenced by the firms great progress over the past five or six years. Okuma is the sleeping giant of fishing tackle.

Okay, now lets talk rods. The PCH rods were designed with SoCal fishing styles in mind, and innovates their technique and technology to build some very interesting and well built rods. Nine models, 7', 7 1/2' and 8 foot lengths, all with relatively fast actions. The rods make use of some of the innovations of other firms, notably United Composites (who are driving rod technology with their materials and designs). UC has been the only firm incorporating uni-directional fiberglass in their composite rods. Okuma is using that material on their tips for this series, and making use of woven carbon fiber, too.

Components are top notch, ALPS HXN guides with Zirconium inserts are used on the extra heavy models, Fuji K-guides with Alconite inserts on the medium and medium/heavy models. All rods feature CAH ALPS double lock down aluminum reel seats. There's a lot of value in the components used, and their blanks are excellent. The 7 and  7 1/2 footers make use of a new foam grip material (TPE) for less water absorption (compared to hypolon) and greater durability. The 8 footers make use of tapered shrink tube grip - deckhand style. All rods make use of an ALPS non-skid rubber butt cap - no gimbal.

As of 5/24 we've received all models except the two heavier 8 footers. Expecting those very soon, tomorrow? I'll also try to get some more images of these very good looking rods over the next day or so.

Once again, congrats to Okuma, these will be very well received rods. Certainly the days of the old heavy fiberglass rods are numbered. That's really how we see our own inventory changing for the better. Imports at $200, domestics at $300, carbon, graphite composites in both production locations. And, the old $200 fiberglass rods simply don't make a great deal of sense when technology has advanced so far over the past 50 years.

Okuma Makaira Rods

First shown at ICAST in July 2011, the Makaira series rods have a lot of positives in terms of components used, rod actions and appearance. Folks know that we are very supportive of both Calstar and Seeker rods, consider them the best made rods in the world, so convincing us to bring in an offshore produced rod is not an easy thing. However, in this instance Okuma got it right again. Like their Makaira series reels, they listened to the right people, and started from scratch to design an excellent series of rods. They learned much from Calstar, one feel of their jigsticks demonstrates that point very well. It's also apparent that they learned much from their association with the Australian fishing community. These are flat out excellent rods, and they are offered at an exceptional value.

Makaira rods feature newly innovated carbon technology in the manufacture of the rod blanks. Light, strong and responsive are well deserved adjectives for these new "sticks." The new rods are stunning in their appearance, with custom abalone decoration above the foregrip on the rods, and exceptional in their actions. They incorporate ALPS deep press 316 stainless guide frames with hard zirconium guide inserts for handling braided lines. Their jigsticks use x-wrap shrink tubing for the grip area for ruggedness and secure handling. Their heavier weight rods feature a custom ALPS aluminum reel seat with abalone underlay, for a truly custom look - with solid performance backing it up. Their IGFA standup rods feature custom leather wrapped foregrips! And their trolling rods use superior quality ALPS premium roller guides for large knot clearance. Their casting rods incorporate an integrated rubber butt cap/gimbal design (both spinning and conventional casting rods). On the heavier trolling and popping rods, an aluminum gimbal is included.

Shipping is included in the price of the rods posted below. The 9 footers are only available for store pickup - shipping expense is NUTZ!

Cedros Jigging Rods

If you are seeking a rod designed for vertical jigging, then the Cedros Speed Jig Rods are well worth your consideration. Designed with a unique flex-to-power distribution, these rods allow your rod tip to work your jig properly while developing the proper transition between the shock of a fish's strike and rod power for bringing a fish to the rail (differing from a well known bicycle manufacturer's noodle sticks - which don't have backbone). Extensive innovation was created into the design of this rod, producing comfort with spiral shaped EVA foregrips and an open rear grip, allowing you to work the rod without hanging up on your clothing to interfere with the action you are trying to impart on the jig. Once you put a reel on your Cedros rod you'll see why they truly are very worthy jig rods - regardless of price.

Features

- E-Glass rod blank construction for increased power and shock reduction for use with braided line.
- Hardened Zirconium PVD coated guide inserts that reduce line friction from braided lines.
- Hi-Rise 316 stainless steel guide frames eliminates the line from touching the blank and foregrip when fully loaded up on a fish and increases durability.
- Pyramid machined aluminum reel seat is the ultimate in comfort, durability and control. (ALPS REEL SEAT)
- Exposed blank reargrip increases rod control and improves jigging technique.
- Jig Clincher - eliminates the jig from swinging when attached to the hook keeper.

All rods feature a split EVA butt section, with two of the heavier rods also offering a gimbal butt.

Note: The triangular shaped ALPS seat used for these wonderful rods will not fit the standard Avet reel base on the SX and MX series reels - you will need to make use of their narrow reel foot, and that's an option.

Nomad Travel Rods

We've been getting requests from folks looking for good offshore rods, that can travel easily -  for years. Unfortunately, there really haven't been any produced that were up to snuff (with the exception of Penn's discontinued light line Travel Rods). There has never been an offshore capable travel rods made to fish the heavier line tests we're most apt to need, you know, the basic stuff like 20-50# class casting rods. They were not made. Well, Okuma created a series of travel rods that will make breezing through high security airports tolerable, cut "oversize" charges from the bill, and provide you with some quality gear that can deal with larger version saltwater fish. Remember all those times you went fishing at a distant shore, only to find the equipment deficient? Well, now you can come prepared! These are effective fishing rods for typical offshore fishing.

There are several unique features these rods incorporate for your advantage. The first thing I noticed is that these three piece rods come with an extra tip section! With the added tip, you can now fish two different line tests from the same rod. Or, you can change up your action to match your particular style for the day's fishing. Nice thought guys! Unlike many multi piece rods which simply won't stand up to the pressure a saltwater fish can provide, these rods use a European Spigot Ferrule connection between sections of the rod. This is stronger, and provides a one-piece feel when fishing. It's a bit harder to put the pieces together, but it's the right design for what we're doing here. You also get an ALPS aluminum reel seat. This is an expensive piece of rod building componetry, and is testament to the rods overall quality and sense of purpose. .

No more relying on whatever gear is at hand when you go on exotic fishing trips. With the Nomad Travel Rod series by Okuma, now you can pack your own rods with ease as you head out on ANY fishing adventure.

Essentially two rods in one, each Nomad Travel Rod comes with two separate tip sections that provide distinctly different actions, but through the use of the European Spigot Ferrule connection points, the rods have an accurate and true "One-Piece" feel and action.

Note: The triangular shaped ALPS seat used for these wonderful rods will not fit the standard Avet reel base on the SX and MX series reels - you will need to make use of their narrow reel foot, and that's an option.

Okuma Nomad Inshore Travel Rods

Okuma expanded their Nomad series to include some excellent inshore models featuring a split grip, OC9 Technology - offering increased durability from graphite blanks and carbon outer wrap. This construction is unique and proprietary in nature, and should be something well received by fishermen as time goes one. All models are 7 feet in length, all offer 2 tip sections for expanded application (example, Medium and Medium Light tips included) and all are 3 piece designs. The waterproof travel bag is of nice construction, and the rods ALL FEATURE European Spigot Ferrule design for added durability and the feel of a one piece rod. Excellent construction, excellent design and equally excellent value with these dandy products from Okuma.

The Okuma Inshores use ALPS components, with two tone blue and silver anodizing color, a trigger on the baitcasting/conventional rods and no trigger on the spinners (of course).  The ALPS guides feature Zirconium inserts for Spectra/braid friendliness and durability. The grips are made from cork for sensitivity and light weight. Nomad Inshore Travel rods are backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Jeeze these guys keep getting things right!

Okuma Travel Rods
New Xpress Series

Okuma introduced a new series of travel rods at ICAST in July 2013, and quite frankly by doing so convinced me not to produce our own very popular 30-40# class rod for the future. Ours did some things better in my humble opinion, made for a better dual purpose troller and caster, and with an extra section it also saved a few inches in traveling. But, Okuma did two things that I simply could not match. Given that they own their own rod factories, they can produce things at a much better cost - when it's in their interest to do so. Further, their rod factory is quite good, as demonstrated by the Makaira series rods. So, upon seeing the new Xpress rods I cancelled our order for the CharkBait 30/40.

Here's the run down on the Xpress Series: These are all three piece rods, seven feet in length, offering very good quality guides and blank construction. The Nomad series from Okuma makes use of better quality ALPS components, the Xpress series does not, the Nomad series rods also offer an extra rod tip in their package so you can cover an additional line class. But, take away those features and the cost drops, and it drops BIG. The new Xpress series rod run under $100! That's simply amazing in my book, less than what I can produce a rod for, and that's due to the size of this behemoth company. Okuma is a huge company, and when they decide to do something, they can indeed blow the socks of any other manufacturer in the sportfishing world. The rods all come in a nice storage bag for easy traveling.

There are two rod series within the Xpress line, inshore and offshore oriented rods.

Citrix Travel Rods

Okuma's Citrix Travel Rods feature IM8 Graphite blank construction for sensitivity and light weight. The rods are four piece and fit into a nice compact tube of about 24" length. They make use of a lightweight EVA split grip for reduced weight, with zero foregrip design for improved balance and weight reduction. Again, Okuma makes great use of ALPS stainless steel guide frames with Zirconium line guide inserts for use with both braided or mono lines. There's a Pac Bay Minima reel seat, anodized aluminum reel seat threads for strength and balance, a stainless steel hook keeper, and Okuma's limited lifetime warranty. For light line inshore saltwater and freshwater use, these are some very nice rods to own and use.

Orders over $150 are shipped FREE!* Orders less than $150 are billed for shipping. Upon placing your order you'll receive an immediate confirmation via email. You are not billed at that time, the confirming email may not reflect oversize or overweight charges or other issues requiring direct contact. We process orders manually, preferring to have a human actually check things over and contact you should there be questions. Within 24 hours of placing your order you will receive a follow-up email confirmation and final  invoice (pdf doc) reflecting your total charges (Monday-Friday). You are not billed until we actually send you your final invoice.  Orders shipped to CA addresses will have California Sales Taxes applied, out of state orders are tax free. During the ordering process you can select expedited shipping if required. (Within the USA we usually ship via Federal Express ground. International, and oversize/weight items will be billed for shipping and you will be sent an emailed invoice reflecting total charges prior to actual billing. We will not ship without you having had a chance to review the invoice). Hawaii and Alaska shipping will be accomplished using USPS Priority service, and our standard shipping cost policy will apply unless the item ordered does not fit in their standard size boxes. If additional shipping fees are required we will contact you.)

As a means to reduce spam, we change the above incoming email addresses regularly.
Please don't bother adding them to your address book.
We do apologize for any inconvenience this policy creates. But, it's the only way we've found to post an email address on-line and not receive so many solicitations from some family member of a deceased "Nigerian" leader trying to move great sums of  $ out of the country...
