We made a great buy on
some terrific Newell reels for the Fred Hall Show. For
guys going after tuna, jigging, bottom fishing,
these two reels are well worth adding to your
collection. Like all Newells, their light weight
makes them delightful to fish. They spin, and
are great casters, legendary performers in that
regard. We scored on the S440 a narrow bodied
4/0 size reel that's at home fishing 30-40#
line. We have these available in both 5:1 and
3.6:1 gearing. It's one of the more popular Baja
reels ever made. Going up a couple notches, we
made a great by on the R631 in both 3:1 and
4.2:1 gear ratios. This narrow 6/0 reel is
capable of 35#'s of drag. While it's almost
sacrilegious to consider a Newell a trolling
reel, these can be used in that manner. But, in
my estimation they really shine vertically
jigging, chunking and flylining a bait for tuna.
The regular MSRP on the S440 is $189, the R631

Newell P Series
A Classic Returns,
then soon disappears...
 Newell
has bowed to popular demand, caved in for a single run of their
classic reels, the P Series. Newell stopped making the P's years back,
you've probably seen 'em used on eBay for something like
$300-400. Newell decided to make one production run, one run and they're all gone. It's going to
be another classic, something that everyone wants...but, they'll
be all gone. The new P Series reels will be available in the
200, 300 and 400 Series products.
Once they're gone, they just won't be available. So,
jump now or forever hold your piece. (click on the image to see
another view of the reels)
So, what's different about the P Series? They use an an
aluminum spool, metal bearing caps, and aluminum spacer bars for
the frame assembly. There are a few other retro features to make
it stand out, like the aluminum handle. It's retro, it's
functional, and it's going to be another classic, as well as a
great performing reel to own. It's going to be a favorite of
yours, too.
 New
News: Newell has just shipped us their long awaited P533F
reels. We've been hoping to see the 500 series in the P
version. This really enhances the 533 for one of it's prime
applications, tossing jigs to wahoo! The inventory is
limited, they will not last very long. Given our HUGE buying
power, we still have a limited stock of the P200, 300 and 400 series
reels. These have been very popular. If you have been
on the fence, get off it. Otherwise, you'll be kicking yourself
when they are all gone...and commanding $350 on EBay.

Yep, when the Beth
asks for something, she usually gets it...
 Folks
following this website know my feelings about Newell reels. They help me
get bit! They also help me get my bait or jigs to where the fish are.
Newell reels have earned their reputation as great casting reels, with
light spools to aid a baitfish swim and get noticed by predatory
gamefish. For years Newell reels were available in every color you
wanted, so long as you wanted black. Well, in 2005 they came out with an
upgraded red series of reels, and for 2006 Carl Newell is introducing
the line in purple! Yep, just like the Beth requested, they did it. Now
she can fish in her typically color coordinated best...and get bit
better than me.
The purple reels
have some upgrades from the "S" series reels. The light weight graphite
spool remains, but you've got an upgraded handle, more stainless steel
on the shifter and clicker buttons, and a few other niceties. The reels
will become collectors items as years go by, and in the mean time
they'll be great fishing companions.

Newell's in the
RED!
 Here's
a new wrinkle on some of our favorite fishing reels. Newell is
making a special run of many of their most popular
reels in RED. They feature some upgraded components, handle, buttons, knobs, star, but beyond that, they're are same old trusted and
reliable Newells. They are kind of a cross between a "P" and "S" series,
with a graphite spool and the other upgraded components of a "P" series.
This is a limited run, there won't be huge volumes produced. We
are hoping to see them in most sizes, though not all gear ratios.
Folks have been trying to get Carl
Newell to produce a reel of a different color for a couple decades it
seems. Not to say black isn't beautiful, it's just that many
anglers would like to have something different. Well, you've got
your wish!

Newell Fishing Reels
 A New Generation of Reels designed by fishermen, for fishermen. Carl W. Newell
started in the tackle business about twenty years ago, by improving what was already on
the market. Supplying discriminating anglers the means to improve the performance of their
old Penns helped establish the Newell name. There quickly became a time when Carl, an avid
fisherman in his own right, came to the conclusion that rather than tinker around with
existing technology and hardware, he could design a product far superior and fill an unmet
demand by fishermen for faster, lighter, stronger, and simpler fishing reels. Carl
combined some great engineering, with graphite, stainless steel and the latest high
technology to produce some of the finest reels available at any price. They also boast the
most corrosion resistance of any product on the market.
The Newells are targeted to specific fishing applications. Kind of like medicine, you've
got both generalists and specialists, those who refine their skills for a particular task.
To my way of thinking, the Newells are the specialists of the fishing reel world. There
are 38 different products in the line. Each one is unsurpassed in it's targeted nitch, and
will outperform other products in specific applications. Personally, I own several
Newells, and love the product for 20-50 lb. line test applications, both bait and jig
fishing. Carl would call me a wimp, but if I'm fishing 60 or higher test line, I'm more
confident of using a two speed. But, there's no doubt, the Newells would get the bait out
farther on a cast, and allow the bait to swim more naturally than other
reels, and that's often the difference in getting bit. That's
why I always have a Newell or three with me if I'm riding on a
charter, or in a more competitive fishing situation. They cast
better, and allow a bait to swim better. They help me get bit
better. I think you'll agree once you put some time in fishing 'em,
they'll help you get bit better too!
 If I'm doing some serious
fishing the Newells go with me. If I'm acting as tour guide for a bunch of first timers
I'll bring other gear. The Newells are the "good stuff" in my tackle closet.
I'll let a friend borrow/use my Shimanos, or Accuratized Penns, but the Newells are my
reserve stock, my secret weapon. If you're into long casts, the NEWELL REELS DEFINE

contraption for organizing leader or sabiki bait
catching rigs. We hadn't seen 'em for years.
But, then one day we asked a stupid question.
We got a smart answer.

We finally got 'em to do it!
 Usually
the #2 Special is a reel, but this week it's just a little handle.
Strange? Nope. It's an very important little handle for many of us.
Let's go back a few years. You know, I like
fishing my Newells a lot. Sure I now own some fancier gear, but there
are times having a 229, 332, 533 or 540 in your hands pays off. You love
'em or hate 'em, and certainly there are better reels out there these
days.
 But, Newells fish. There are times when they are the right reel to
fish, they'll do you better than any other reel for a particular set of
conditions. Having said that, in my mind the only thing I'd be inclined
to change on my moderate to larger size Newells were my handles. Even on
the P series, the crank can be made better. So, I bugged the guys at
Tiburon. I bugged 'em for a few years: "Make me a handle for my Newells!"
"Make that 100, I know other guys want 'em too." I even shipped them a
couple of my own reels almost a year ago so they could size things up
properly. Well, they finally made handles for our Newell reels
(as you can tell from my 540 pictured-left). They
made us a great handle, light, much stronger, offset grip for comfort
and greater cranking power. SUPER!.
