Specialty Electric Saltwater Reels

Daiwa produces six power assist reels, all revolutionary in their own way. These power assist reels utilize battery/12 volt power to automate and assist the drudgery of deeper water fishing. There are more applications, but that's a virtue all share, with the 1000 size reels gaining some additional advantage based upon their size, strength and potential for kite applications in addition to the deep water and jigging possibilities. Perhaps a bit more of a financial commitment is required to rationalize the MP3000, but the deepwater swordfishing potential of this beast makes it's ownership a bit more rational. It may be a bit of over kill for a 12# redfish, but a couple hundred pounds of swordfish, well, that's another story and the capability is certainly present.

Daiwa Dendoh Tanacom Bull

Daiwa's Dendoh Tanacom Bull 1000 (TB 1000) is something warranting excitement from folks targeting DEEP water fish or fishing off a kite (see item 10). In the old days there were a limited number of add-on power winders on the market for commercial application that fit a specific reel. These were bulky and expensive. Daiwa designed the Dendoh power-assisted reels from the ground up to provide deep water anglers an alternative. The Tanacom Bull (Tunacom) was designed for deep saltwater application, and also for use as a kite reel. It's large enough to hold the appropriate amount of line for it's intended application, and robust enough to provide many, many years of exceptional service. It's also relatively compact for it's application, much more so than the add-on alternative. The reel can be used by crank (robust levelwind design), by direct power with the supplied 9' 12 volt DC cable, or with the addition of optional battery packs. It features 4 ball bearings, heavy duty brass and bronze gearing, variable control of winding speed and power and a programmable jigging function. There's a digital readout measuring line out and distance retrieved from the bottom, a programmable auto stop which stops winding once a lure reaches the surface... The TB1000 is the model with heavy duty marine application in mind. It's robust, high capacity, and most surprisingly affordable.
The ultimate kite reel quickly winds in the kite and stops by itself while you fight the fish. Plenty of power and capacity for deep drops.

At the ICAST show in July I saw a new version of the TB1000, effectively a two-speed automatic power assisted beast! The Seaborg Megatwin has a dual speed range with power assist winding. The Megatwin reels let you shift between two separate power ranges with the simple press of a button. In operation it's very similar to a two speed reel, with cranking power or high speed retrieve options. Chose high speed range for quick retrieve of terminal rigs and for checking bait. Or, push the button and shift to the high power range for pulling up heavy weights and moving large fish. The SB1000MT features a maximum winding power of 22 pounds continuous/momentary 163#'s! Spec'd more traditionally, this reel has a maximum of 44#'s drag. It is a beast, like it's single speed brother, it's a very refined piece of precision gear, too. The SB features 12 CRBB bearings and 11 ball bearings.

	MP-3000 - This reel is a beast if there ever was one. It's large, 80 size and robust with over 80#'s of drag to work with. If you are targeting deep water broadbill swordfish, this piece can well be rationalized regardless of expense.

Much more compact than the larger 1000 or the big beast 3000, the Daiwa 750 and 500are far less intimidating to hold for a day's fishing. While being smaller, they are no less competent in fulfilling their intended application. They are great reels to own for folks targeting rockfish and halibut. And, for those looking for some fun at the rail, they can turn some yellowtail quite well too!

Saltiga Braided Boat Line

It took me a while to warm to this product, multi-colored lines have earned a pretty poor review over the past years. But, it seems to me the folks at Daiwa have a good thing going with their version of a "super braid." Their Saltiga Braided line is a bit different from the norm. It's a "super line" along the lines of PowerPro, Izor, Jerry Brown... The thing that sets it apart is that it's actually a darn good version of the super braid genre, and it offers bottom fishing anglers a nice advantage. It's a five color line, providing a distinct color break each 10 meters and with five and one meter indicators so you know your depth with accuracy. It's a smooth braid, not the stiff coated stuff you've come to dislike... It really does have more of a feel like Izor or JB. It is an 8 braid line, of thin diameter. (JB, BW and Izor are typically 12 or more). It's not stiff, with an abraisive coating. It will deal with line guides more kindly that at least one popular braided line we know of. Daiwa introduced this line as part of it's Dendoh style power assist reels which were designed to fish deep. But, this accessory product has a great future ahead on any reel who's owner happens to do some bottom fishing.

Daiwa Accessory Reel Seat Clamp

Here's something that many guys have been waiting for. I know Max here at the shop has been bugging me about this since ICAST. Daiwa showed off a wonderful accessory at the show, a reel clamp that fits most reel on the market. While it was made to fit their Saltiga 15-50, Saltist 20-50, Leverdrag 20-50, Levelwind 20-50 and Line Counter 20-50 (excluding their Big Game Series). As you can see from the images, we put one on a little Luna 300, and she fit! There will be a broad range of application. The piece features a couple spacers to allow a better match for different reels and rods. It's a very nice piece of aluminum, strong, well finished, sleek and smooth. It's very much a precision product, and could be something you've been looking for. They're not cheap, but they're darn good!
