The new Komodo reels take off where the
previous series left off, and takes these wonderful reels to a new
level of performance, as well as a new size! There are some big
improvements over other manufacturers designs, no aluminum gears
here, the Komodo SS series offers stainless steel main and pinion
gears! BIG, STRONG and durable gears unlike some other
non-mentionable competitor, and the drive and spool shafts are made
from stainless steel, too! The frame is made from diecast aluminum,
as are the sideplates. The new reels have a corrosion resistant
finish, machined aluminum, anodized spool with multi disc high
output Carbonite drag washers. The star has a multi click feature
for precise drag settings. Two basic sizes, 350 and 450, with 6 + 1
corrosion resistant stainless steel bearings on the smaller model
and 7+1 on the big brother. The spool bearings are Japanese ABEC
5's, dual anti-reverse for maximum reliability. You have a 6 pin
velocity control casting system (brake), sychronized levelwind which
is optimized for braided line, Zirconium line guide inserts for
added security and long term performance with braided lines. And,
the reels have

The new Komodo's are well built, and the
manufacturer knows it - and backs it up with the best warranty in
the business. Priced from $219 to $269, Okuma has another pair of

Metaloid Round Baitcast
ICAST 2016 Introduction
introduced a new Metaloid Round Baitcaster at ICAST 2016. The old
Cedros reel, similar round baitcaster was sadly discontinued the
previous year. That reel had been a nice alternative to the low
profile style levelwind, the new Metaloid picks up where that piece
left off. The Metaloid offers performance beyond the older reel.
Nice to have this option in their line of reels! The new reel offers
a strong aluminum, black anodized frame which is ported to reduce
weight. Aluminum machined sideplates offer long term performance,
again black anodized for protection from saltwater electrolysis.
There's a multi-disc Carbonite drag system, micro click ratcheting
star drag for precise settings. The reel has a dual anti0-reverse,
four ball bearings and one roller bearing, all stainless steel drive
system. Precision machine cut brass main and pinion gears with a 6
pin velocity control casting system. The levelwind is synchronized,
offering optimum performance with braided lines. The reel also has a
clicker! These new reels are backed by a 1 year limited warranty and
offer anglers an exceptional value.

2017 release of the ALC MAG will appeal to anglers seeking a
compact and light star drag reel for inshore and light offshore
applications. I'm thinking that some of our salmon guys will
appreciate this piece. Size-wise, the reel reminds me quite a bit of
Penn's old International 975. It's an interesting reel, a lot of
features for the price. But, there are a few points to bring up that
may narrow the reel's acceptance by some of the more fucused
anglers. While the reel offers a mag cast control, on the surface it
does not seem to offer quite enough freespool to warrant that
feature's inclusion. I look at the piece as a great inshore troller,
vertical dropper, with secondary casting applications. Might change
that opinion once I fish the piece, but my take at first look is
that it's a dandy general purpose reel but not a preferred piece for
those seeking a long distance caster. Then again, at $150 it's more
than worthy of some serious consideration.

2015 ICAST Introduction
another key ICAST product introduction for
2015 from Okuma, with a larger size
added at 2015's ICAST show. These are dedicated
saltwater reels, made from die cast aluminum
for strength, and to reduce corrosion they
also make use of carbon fiber internally to
shield against electrolysis where dissimilar
metals meet. Strong machined aluminum
handle, dual force drag system for greater
drag capability, designed for use with
braided lines. The
spool shaft is also over sized, again to
deal with increased drag pressures - which
these reels can indeed produce. The reels
also have a non-slip spool, so your braid
won't spin on the spool when under pressure,
and excellent bearings designed for
saltwater applications. Great new reels,
excellent features, rock solid design, and
they are priced aggressively.

designed for saltwater use, the Cedros spinning reels feature a rigid
aluminum body and roter. Okuma's Dual Force Drag System for extreme
stopping power and proprietary High Density Gearing with special
corrosion resistant coating provide power and long term satisfaction in
a harsh saltwater environment. Combine all this with a high speed
gearing ratio and a customized aluminum jigging handle and you have one
of the best saltwater jig fishing reels on the market. For guys vertical
jigging, this is a dandy choice due to it's metal construction (frame,
sideplate, rotor, spool) and very high drag capability.

NEW 80 Size Cedros
I first saw this new spinner at the ICAST show in July 2009,
and thought at that time that Okuma had another winner on their hands. (They
really have turned things around from a few years ago in
terms of fresh ideas AND quality design and production).
Okuma made a cosmetic and slight refinement to the Trio in
2012, image reflects that. The
new Trio series offer high
drag capability, strong construction, made for Spectra,
unique aluminum/graphite hybrid-crossover construction and
The reel utilizes graphite as well as aluminum to create a
new generation of reels - similar to what we're seeing on
some race oriented cars these days. This allows for high
strength as well as lighter weight by design.
All factors combine nicely to create a very interesting
series of reels.
Innovation at it's freshest...the new Trio spinning reels
from Okuma feature an unique crossover construction. They
took the best from aluminum construction and lightweight
graphite materials and created a distinctive new concept in
reel design. The solid one piece stamped aluminum reel stem
and rotor arm are paired with lightweight graphite
sideplates and rotor housing, which provide strength where
needed, and weight savings where possible. the Trio spool
construction utilizes a multi-piece construction, housing
the drag system in an aluminum drag chamber for added
stability and smoothness, while utilizing a lightweight
graphite housing for weight reduction and distinctive
