Diamond Nylon Monofilament Line

At the request of many of our clients, we've added Momoi to our stable of great fishing products. In truth, it took me quite a while to confirm why we needed to add this manufacturer's product to our mix. Ande had been around a long time, makes a good line. Berkley is well established.  P-Line makes a great product, tough, limited stretch with great casting capabilities. And, Izor...well it's the most thought of and most highly recommended line for long range fishing in the world. It's low stretch, high abrasion resistance and understated/conservative test ratings make it the line of choice in that style of fishing. But, folks asked us for Momoi. So, I did my own homework and honestly liked what I found. They have several well considered versions of mono in their line, including I.G.F.A. We will no doubt bring in over variants of  their offerings. But, first off I was keenly interested in bringing in their Diamond Nylon Mono and their Spectra/Braided line.

Momoi's Diamond line is indeed tough and conservatively rated like Izor's. But, it's a little softer and thinner. Those two qualities alone made it worth the investment. Momoi's Diamond mono has earned high marks for superior abrasion resistance under extreme fishing conditions. This formulation of their line offers tensile strengths up to 200% of stated line tests. As a result, knot strength is excellent - and that's often where other lines fall short. Momoi's Diamond line is available in an ivory clear, offshore blue and hi-vis yellow. It reminds me of Izor's line, but it's a bit thinner in diameter.

bulletMomoi Diamond Spectra Braided Line

Two firms were most responsible for bringing Spectra to the fishing community. PowerPro essentially offered their high-end kite line to fishermen. That's a fine line for bottom fishing, but left much to be desired for folks wanting better knots, less abrasion and for use as a backing. Izorline was the other pioneer in the field, offering a line better suited to what we needed in terms of thin diameter, high test and long life.  Since those early days other manufacturers have entered this field, most failed miserably offering a coarse line that proved difficult to work with. Jerry Brown was one major exception, but he too based his product on Izor's pioneering efforts (in my opinion). Jerry did better than most simply because he too was a long range fisherman and understood what we wanted from a Spectra line. By far the worst of the "super braids" have come from offshore, and some "freshwater" focused spidery-type lines. The critical thing in my opinion is the thread count, carriers, coating (or preferably) lack thereof, and pics (or weaves per inch). These characteristics determine how easy the line is to work with, how coarse it is, knot strength, grip, ability to splice, and acceptability for saltwater use. Having said all that, Momoi did get it right. Their line is colored, similar/same as JB's blue. It is a coated line, but that coating is imperceptible and actually improves the lines long term performance rather than degrading it like Power Pro's coating which comes off with wear...or spooling. Momoi has a very good Spectra braid product to offer.

The manufacturer's pitch: Diamond Fishing Products is proud to announce the next advance in braided line technology, DIAMOND BRAID. Diamond Braid joins the best monofilaments in the world. Momoi's Braid incorporates the latest braiding techniques which improves strength at diameter, 3% stretch and bonded color-fastness that prevents flaking or fading. The product is made in USA and uses true Spectra fibers and technology. This is not an offshore copy of American design.

This process produces a round line that ensures greater reel capacity, decreased twist, distance casting and longer fishing life. Our perfect roundness allows tighter spool winding, prevents line from "knifing" through spools and significantly improves knotting performance. Also, this braid is a hollow core from 80lb. through 200lb - perfect for splicing.

DIAMOND HOLLOW CORE BRAID SPLICING
**

Make a sharp cut on the tag end of the Braid to be spliced.  Relax the Braid and tap the end lightly to flare the Braid and create a target for the monofilament/fluorocarbon.

Prepare your leader topshot by inserting your line into the cutting block.  Cut the leader cleanly along the edge of the cutting block.

Rotate the leader topshot line a quarter turn and cut cleanly again.  This tapered end will hold the leader in the splicing needle.

Select the proper needle for your splice.  Match the outside diameters of your needle and monofilament/leader.  Typically, there are two sizes, a smaller needle for 80# and a larger needle for 100# and above.

Heat the hollow end of the needle so the leader sticks to the inside walls of the needle.  Buff end of the leader with fine grit sandpaper.  Burrs and sharp edges on the leader will shred the Braid from the inside.  Wedge the leader material into the heated hole machined in the end of the needle.  Push it in as far as it will go.

Holding the hollow Braid vertically between thumb and index finger - insert the needle slowly into the relaxed Braid, sliding the Braid back every 4 inches.  The more the Braid bunches up - the more it frays and the tighter the weave becomes.

When splice is approximately one fathom in length - poke the needle out of the Braid and cut the leader.  Remove the needle and smooth the sharp edges of the leader with fine grit sandpaper.  If not rounded and smoothed, the sharp edges on the leader will cut their way out.

IMPORTANT*** - Lock the drag on the reel down and take a wrap around the spliced section and run out all the slack (***Repeat 3 times***).  This is a critical step!

To finish - whip approximately 4" top and bottom with dental floss or lighter Braid with wax.  Use a series of half hitches to secure splice.
