Gamakatsu is well known as Japan's finest manufacturers of hooks. Their hooks are an excellent alternative to another terrific Japanese made hook (Owner). There are enough differences between Owner and Gamakatsu's offerings to justify both sharing some space in your tackle box.

gamakatsulogo.jpg (12684 bytes)GamaKatsu's circle hooks have proven quite popular, and productive.  I'm a big fan of Owner's circle hooks, and didn't initially want to bring in another similar line.  But, after playing around with the hook, getting some requests for the product, we had to introduce the line. The hooks are kind of a "tweener" product, a bit thinner in diameter than an Owner Mutu, but heavier than Owner's Mutu Light.  As a result, they will find lots of applications.  When you need something a bit heavier than the lightweight circles, but not as heavy as the standard Owner offering the GamaKatsu's fill the bill.  Given their late entry to the market, they also try to include an extra hook or so in their pocket packs. 

3/0 comparison - Owner & GamakatsuLike their other SUPER hooks and Owner's premium product, the Gamakatsu's are made from black high carbon steel which will last quite well in the saltwater environment. Click on the picture to the left to see a comparison of Owner and Gamekatsu's 3/0 size circle hooks.  I think you'll see why I believe the hooks complement one another in an angler's arsenal.   They're still stout, but a bit smaller than the Owner Super and Standard Mutu's.   Also, like the Owner, these are not a one time use product, you'll get lots of fishing from these hooks, that is unless some fish takes 'em deep - which just doesn't happen with circle hooks.  I'd say at least 90% of the time these hooks will penetrate the corner of the fish's mouth.  For catch and release these are great, for catch and eat they're very effective, too.  The Nautalus hooks are available in size 1 through 6/0.  The regular retail price is $4.95, but we're offering these great hooks for a buck off that price.

Gamakatsu Live Bait Hooks

The live bait hooks are a rugged high performance "J" hook made super sharp and with the best steel available. Their shank is fairly short, which makes hooking up a baitfish much more subtle in presentation. The Live Bait hooks are offered in either a light wire or heavy version. There are a lot of folks who strongly believe in the value of red hooks.  For instance, a buddy came by the shop today, went out on a 3/4 day party boat.  They were targeting anything that would bite.  While fishing the Huntington Flats, one fellow hooked on a nice 'but, got it to the surface, gaffed and brought her aboard.  When the deckhand saw the red hook in the flatties mouth he hollered out, "Red Hook! Break out the red hooks!" Several fish were caught, many shorts, but one that weighed in at 28#.  That's a nice So.Cal. Halibut.  It may be small by some of our buddies up north, but down here we have a smaller variety of halibut.  Many guys who fish for white seabass also have come to really trust having some red on their jigs for WSB, and red hooks ready for fishing fin-bait. There are some water related optical reasons for the attraction to red hooks or red on white jigs.  I'm no scientist, but I'll try anything that adds a bit to my luck. Red Octopus hooks from Gamakatsu, well, better fishermen than I believe in 'em, who am I to argue.

Assist 510 Jigging Lure Stinger Hooks

Here's a trick new gizmo that's looking for applications.  Gamakatsu recently came out with a neat stinger hook rig that's going to be seen on a lot of lures as time rolls along.  This new accessory will change the way anglers fish vertical jigs.  You see, jigs work great so long as fish do what's expected, and strike the right end of the lure.  When they don't you get bumped, but not hooked.  With the Assist 510 you can improve your odds of setting a hook by running the rig at the head of your lure.  It's designed to hook any fish that strikes the head of a vertically jigged lure.  

The hook itself is a super short shank with a round wide gap and long sticky sharp curved point, and a micro barbed reverse barb. The out-barb prevents the hook from catching on or chaffing the main-line.  The hook is firmly attached to a loop made from super-strong braded line.  The loop and hook shank are covered with a durable heat shrink tubing that protects the loop connection from abrasion and saltwater.  The loop and shrink tubing are both done in red for a little extra attraction, like a blood line on some lures and bait catchers.  

To attach, just run the loop through an eye of the lure and loop it back over the hook, you're done. No split rings, knots or anything else, rigging is easy and fast.  The hooks range from 1 to 4/0, tin finished for corrosion resistance.  The loop on the 1-3/0 Assist's is 100# test, for the 4/0 it bumps up to 150#. The Assist runs $4.99, three per pack for all sizes except the 4/0 which has two per pack.

Gamakatsu's Assist Hooks have helped revolutionize jig fishing. To make things even more effective and simpler they've added some other nifty products for this style of rigging. The Magic Eye swivel has a unique flattened section on one ring that allows you to easily insert the ring into split rings without the use of split-ring pliers or other more creative devices that end up ruining split rings. The Magic Eyes are also VERY small for their 100#  strength. They are a premium swivel, and greatly simplify making up knife jig rigs.

Gamakatsu has also introduced a very creative Nose Ring Treble Hook system that's a wonderful tool for catching halibut. Trap rigs are by far the most effective system for catching elusive fish like halibut. Halibut are well known for mouthing a bait from the tail, and if they sense anything wrong, spitting the bait. You know when this happens, you'll see the scratches along the back sides of your once frisky bait. With a trap rig this happens much less, you end up with a fish caught instead of a bait spit. Gamakatsu's Nose Ring Rigs are a great solution, and will definitely help you nail some nice tasting halibut. They're available in both single hook and treble hook configurations. One very nice feature is that the nose ring can be slid up or down along the main line accommodating baits of different lengths.
