Tamer Sportfishing Products
New Product Introduction
jigs are workhorses, productive for a wide
variety of fish, and successfully fished in a
few different styles. They can be used cast and
retrieve and vertically. They can be dragged
along the bottom, they can be used with a slab
from fresh cut bait, with a curly tail grub,
bottom line they are flexible producers of
gamefish. Over the past 15 years we've stocked
some wonderful bucktails from several
manufacturers, SPRO, P-Line and ProFishCO. Every
one of them had some characteristics we liked,
and some features we desired to see...but
didn't. Sadly, two of those suppliers stopped
production of their lures. So, ToroTamer came
along and made their own, based on what we
wanted to see.
At our shop in Huntington Beach we are fortunate
to have a very talented private boater, Beta,
who is one of the best white seabass fishermen I
know. Several years ago he began using a jig
(that I'll claim credit to introducing him to) a
simple bucktail jig. Beta fished 'em with a
fresh dead squid and found it was perfection,
almost a do-nothing bait that was his most
productive secrete weapon for WSB. There were
hook could be improved, and even more of a
problem, the supplier for the jig went out of
business. ToroTamer's design is not unique, far
from it, it's simply a refinement of an already
very good lure - and it's made with the right
kind of skirting and right kind of hook. There
are four color patterns available for the jigs,
white, glow, red and white and blue and white.
lures all feature a fishskin with unique UV
properties and glow. All lures are hand tied,
and then reinforced so that they'll hold up
well. For those of you who know the productivity
of bucktail jigs and are familiar with their
use, you'll find plenty of things to appreciate
with these designs. To those new to fishing a
bucktail, put some time in fishing them and you
will discover a new go-to lure for sure.
Inshore/Surf Diver Minnows
New smaller sizes
for inshore fishing!
fishing is a blast, and it's accessible to most fishermen who
travel to the coast...or are lucky enough to live there! No boat
required to catch plenty of fish from the shore, and hitting the
harbors and bays brings even more options. Not impossible to
have those 100 fish days fishing the surf zone or watching the
tides to maximize your returns. Surf fishing is something that
does not demand a whole lot of preparation for, it gets back to
the basics of fishing, and it can be enjoyed by everyone in the
family. And, in many cases saltwater gear made for inshore
fishing also works quite well in freshwater (given corrosion and
conditions, saltwater designed gear can work in freshwater, but
it's not necessarily a great idea to use freshwater gear in the
salt...). Darn good way to spend some time by the beach,
and if you want to get more serious about...well, the returns
are there to justify the time spent - for sure!
For the past few months we've been working on additions to
our lineup for inshore anglers, and now we are quite proud to
come to market with some new lures made
this specific style of fishing. These new lures are all
internally weighted with a weight transfer system, all have
internal rattles to attract fish in water with less than perfect
visibility. All the new lures feature saltwater safe hooks, and
are available in both deep diver and shallow diver forms. We
have three sizes in the new Inshore/Surf lineup, 60mm, 75mm and
90mm (about 2.5", 3", 3.5"), and weight runs 6 gm, 10 gm, 16gm
(.21 oz, .35 oz., .6 oz). You won't find prettier lures on the
market, every detail is correct, and they swim predictably well.
All lures are floating divers, and they will get
These are very good quality, durable lures, designed to hold
up through many fish. Please do compare these to other popular
brands, and you'll see the value is quite apparent. Look at Yo-Zuri's
and Rapala's inshore lures, Lucky Craft and others. These are
well produced, lures of extraordinary value and they'll catch
fish just as well...if not better for about 50% the price of the
Tamer Subsurface Swimmer: You may be aware of a similar lure that's been on the
Japanese market and gained some following in this country (shibuki).
That piece proved effective as a casting lure and as a
trolled lure, and cost a good $50 unrigged! Pricing was a
function of a few things, among them a good old boy network
created by the Japanese firm selling them. They didn't take
much of an interest in anyone but a chosen few selling them
on this side of the pond. That's a restraint of competition
in my humble opinion, and helps explain the high price of
the lure. As you can see, we have a broader selection of colors
available, similar design, quality built to withstand
punishment from the toughest fish. The weight and length is the same as the
more expensive Japanese import. We are making these
wonderful lures available both rigged and unrigged. The
first ones available are the unrigged lures. Our rigged
lures will feature quality Mustad treble hooks of
appropriate strength. The unrigged lures have been used by
guys with both trebles and single hooks.
The lures are great
casters, with some heft to them and a unique internal
magnetic weight transfer system that aids in the cast
and provides a sonic attraction as well. They are
thru-wired for extra strength. The lures are 80 grams (~3
ounces) in weight and 20 cm long (7.9"). They will dive up
to 2 meters ~ 6 feet and are rated for a 50 kg (100#)
breaking strength. You'll note the quality of construction
upon inspection, and we encourage you to compare these lures
to any on the market.
These lures have taken
tuna, some big ones during our evaluation stage this past
season, as well as yellowtail and many other species of
fish. They will also surprise you with their ability to
troll effectively, partially as a result of the stabilizing
dorsal fin. While they were designed for big fish, they'll
prove very effective on smaller fish - with some of our
local guys using them to great effect on BIG calico bass.
The lures are very well overbuilt.
Unrigged lures ordered from this page will come with 3
300#+ test rings. Click on the image to examine more
Note the magnetic weight transfer system with rear pad
at the tail to prevent cracking of lure, and the
balancing weight rear.
Of course the lures are properly thru wired and can
well handle over 100# of stress, meaning there is NO
issue dealing with larger grade tuna and
appropriately HIGH drag settings.
Toro Tamer Wahoo Ripper
- Cast and Rip Bait For Wahoo
2012 the Wahoo Ripper will be a Toro Tamer product
line. For this production we've introduced a
couple of changes from our first generation
product. The new lures feature a larger welded
ring so there's more swing to the jig. We've
upgraded the hook, which was already excellent on
this product. And, the prism tape is applied to
both sides of the lure and is non-graduated. These
are the changes, but some things stayed the same.
Lure weight is still 125 and 200 grams, in both
chrome and gold. They are still made from solid
BRASS so they drop fast and are super strong.
Here's the downside, the cost of brass is what put
the larger 5 and 7 ounce Krocodile spoons out of
production - those lures would have ended up
costing $30 or more...at dealer cost, given the
of the brass. Our new production carried a higher
cost too based upon raw materials. There's a
reason we don't go to steel for the product, it's
not as good. The lures need to be produced from
brass - just like the Krocs. So, price on the new
ones is a bit higher, but also understand it's the
only game in town. This is probably the same
reasoning effecting the production of Raider Jigs,
which these products are in part based upon.
They've not produced in 2 years time. Since we are
factory direct we can hold prices down better, but
in the case of the increase in raw material
charges even with our efficiencies and direct
marketing these are not inexpensive jigs. If they
weren't such a basic staple on the long range
scene we might have given up too. But, the fact
is, these are a go-to bait for wahoo, arguably the
best jig ever made for the 'hoo.
® Wounded Swimmer
New Lure for Wahoo
The new version of our
popular Wounded Swimmer is into it's second generation. This
lure was based upon an old SPRO design which was discontinued a
few years back. Then, it was a general purpose
mostly popular in the smaller sizes. But, upon it being
discontinued we made a large purchase and one of our clients
discovered it's strength as a wahoo lure. Based upon his
experience (goes by the nickname Planet, a PhD-type
teaching and researching at a CA university between fishing
trips), we brought the piece back as a CharkBait lure a
couple years ago in two large sizes and it did very, very well
for wahoo, yellowfin tuna and yellowtail (among other species).
It did extraordinarily well for the "skins."
In this update
we've continued with the improvements made before, and added
something for the guys targeting larger, harder pulling fish
like tuna and wahoo. Now the lures have a ball bearing swivel as
the attachment point for the hook, and we've added an oversized
welded ring at the nose instead of the split ring for even
better action from the lure. Both improvements will provide
anglers with a better performance, and our thru wire
construction and less brittle body (than the old SPRO) means the
lure can survive longer in the real world encounters with a hard gelcoat on a boat without catastrophic cracking. It can happen,
but it takes far more punishment than the old SPRO did, and
we've made it a better lure for catching wahoo and tuna.
we made a better mousetrap - make that fish trap. We have
made the lures five productive colors, two sizes, 150 and 100
gram weights, 6 1/4 & 5 1/2 inches respectively. They have a
very nice curve which provides some added action on the
retrieve, and upon the drop mimics a stunned bait as it drops in
a flutter. The lures are exceptional, and all the colors are
excellent in attracting attention from the targeted species. The
big eyes also add to their realistic
appearance and attention
getting, fish attracting performance. These are some of the best
wahoo and tuna lures you'll find. They can be fished on the
slide as well as cast and retrieve mode. The price went up a tad
from the earlier production, but the value is in the upgrade
lures without a doubt. Both the new hook, welded ring and swivel
will make these lures even better than their predecessor, and
those were darn good lures with lots of fish to their credit.
NEW Deep Water
Soft Bodied Octopus
for Jigging and Cast/Retrieve use
here we go again with a unique lure sure to
bring joy to fishermen and fish on the deck!
We're happy to introduce our new Toro Tamer
SOFT TAKO lures just in time for the
summer season. We have these unique lures
produced in four sizes and five color
patterns. The lures are priced right, and they
will offer anglers something that fish haven't
seen much of, but something that's a tasty
treat for all species of fish, OCTOPUS!
How to fish 'em: First
thing, make use of some good scent like
Sauce, Uni-Butter, Pro Cure, Smelly Jelly. All
these things can make a difference in how long
the fish will accept an imitation bait and
they all are effective in this regard.
Consider how an octopus moves, and mimic that
action. There are times an octopus will slowly
creep along the bottom, and there are times
they are fired up and in flight moving pretty
darn quickly to get away from another
predator. So, in reality you can fish these
lures a few different ways. We experimented
fishing them as we would a knife jig
vertically and we also fished 'em as we would
a swim bait, and I have to say we got bit both
ways. If the water was cooler, we found
greater success fishing 'em slow along the
bottom, and that makes sense too. So, please
try different things, vary your presentation
and make use of a good scent or squid strip on
the lure. If you spend the time, you will be
The new lures are
available in some very attractive colors,
Orange, Purple Haze, DEEP Purple, White and
Chartreuse. The come in four weights, 24 gm
(.85 oz), 46 gm (1.6 oz), 85 gm (~3 oz)
110 gm (4 oz) weights, with lengths of 90,
110, 130 and 150 mm.
All lures feature a
double hook arrangement, with both single and
treble hooks rigged for sure hookups.
Got a quick report from one of the guys who
fished 'em the week they arrived. As you can
see, the calico bass inhaled the critter:
Its always a blast
talking to you at the shop John. Here are
those pics of my bass on the orange soft
Tako. Hopefully I will have more to send you
over this weekend. Ill be in later this week
to get some more of these awesome and unique
baits. Thanks again. -Andrew G.
are catching calico bass like crazy guys, well
worth jumping on 'em!
Jigs for deep water are effective, super
effective lures. Their shape allows for a nice
swim on the drop, and they'll take a wide
range of gamefish - a very wide range. Some
use them to great effect on tuna, yellowtail,
and of course there's no rockfish that won't
jump on 'em, same for ling cod. We've made our
Banana jigs in three finishes, chrome, gold
and luminescent glow, and they're available in
five sizes: 60 gm / 2.1oz /4", 100 gm / 3.5
oz / 5", 200 gm / 7 oz /6", 300 gm / 10.6 oz / 6 1/2",
400 gm /
14.1 ounces / 7".
Compared to similar lures on the
market, we've upgraded the hooks used on our
jigs. We run a single Mustad hook on the
smallest size and 3X Mustad black chrome
trebles on the larger sizes. All hooks are
attached by way of split ring, and we add a
swivel to the nose of the lure to deal with
line twist. Nice lures folks, I'm sure you'll
agree the first time you see 'em and even more
certain once you fish 'em. Given they're our
own production, the pricing is very user
friendly, as well.
For our long range
anglers, or those on the East Coast targeting
larger grade tuna, consider rigging up the
200, 300, or 400 gm size lures with single
hooks of appropriate strength. Certainly the
go-to lure color in this regard, for those
times when the fish are holding deep, is the
luminescent banana, though the chrome or gold
will prove effective in their own right. The lumo is a
personal favorite of mine, however.
We offer single hook rigging as an option
below. This makes a very effective alternative
to a Salas PL68.
On our most recent
production we've discontinued the chrome and
gold colored jigs. These are now available
on closeout. The Lumo models are what we'll
maintain going forward. They've proven very
effective on this side of the sea for folks
targeting a wide range of bottom fish, but
also TUNA, BIG LONG RANGE TUNA. The Lumo
model imitates a squid, and that's something
the fish love to munch when available.
That's probably why we had such a huge
demand for these jigs in the 200 and 300
sizes last fall and summer. On the new production of
the Lumo/Glow Banana Jigs we made a couple
changes to the hook placement, moving the
hooks to the heavy side of the jig for the
300 and 400 gm sizes. This will result in
less tangles on a deeper drop. The image at
the top of this section shows that change in
rigging. For the smaller sizes hook
placement stays put on the lighter side of
the jig allowing for better casting and
