Fish
Alaska
If you're heading up
to Alaska, or fishing anywhere in the great white north country (even
Murmansk!) We've gathered some very interesting specialty products
guaranteed to make your time more productive. The lures here will
target halibut primarily, however there is some crossover to ling cod
and other fish you'll find up north. We're not focusing on salmon
species, but rather the larger halibut with these specialty rigs.
Before
getting into the products, here's a little testimonial about
what River2Sea lures can accomplish...
Hey Mark, just got back from a trip to
Alaska last week and have some pictures for ya. On 7/31 I
fished with Captain Andy Mezirow on the Crackerjack Voyager out
of Seward, AK. We got into some decent halibut, lingcod, and
yelloweye rockfish. Got limits of halibut for the boat up to
80-90 lbs. I gave Captain Andy some
River2Sea Sea
Rock jigs (purchased at the shop) to try out for lingcod and
he hooked and landed a nice halibut: Now the amazing part of this story is
that the very next day, Andy let a customer of his fish the
same jig (500g Sea Rock) and it landed a monster 330 pounder!
Thought I'd pass this along as I'm sure you'd be interested
in hearing that these Sea Rock jigs are legitimate! Andy is
the best of the best when it comes to halibut fishing in
Alaska, and this was the biggest halibut to ever grace the
decks of any of his boats, and the biggest to come into the
port of Seward, ever.
Sea Rock
Another popular style of jigs from River 2 Sea are their Sea
Rocks.
These
are weighted head first, giving a more traditional action on the drop.
They do have more action, and I believe you'll find them very effective
fished vertically. Basically these are a head first weighted lure verses
the butt heavier as the Knifes offer. Both get bit, but there's more
action on the drop with the Sea Rock style. The knife will drop faster,
and that can be an advantage in certain conditions and depths.
We're stocking the Sea Rock jigs
in five sizes and five patterns. The big one is 700 grams/25 ounces!
It's one big jig for specific conditions and sought after fish like BIG
grouper. We also stock the 500, 300. 200 and 150 gram models. Patterns
include sardine, purple back, blue back, green back and a brown bait.
Another nice feature of the SeaRock jigs is their beautiful finish.
Great detail and care has been taken in making these lures. They are
very reflective, with a holographic effect. They're even luminous to
attract more attention down deep.

Proper rigging usually includes a
split ring on the front of the lure, to which are attached one or two
"assist" style hooks. We're only showing off the largest two sizes here,
of course smaller lures are produced and offered on our River2Sea page
of the lure section within our site. The large 500 & 700 gm sizes are
what's most used in Alaska.

Quick-Release
Weights
We
came across a new product that's an alternative to the traditional lead
we use, and offers some flexibility in application that you may find
quite interesting...and very worthwhile. Quick-Release Sinkers are lead
free and made in the USA. Like a few other firms involved in fishing
tackle, the primary business of maker of the weight system has a
machining firm. He's also a fisherman. He saw the benefit of having the
flexibility to quickly change the weight used on a bottom rig. Differing
condition, current, depth, all demand differing amounts of weight...if
you intend to get your offering down to where the targeted fish live. If
you're going to fish for bottom scratchers, you'd better plan on
actually getting to the bottom!
Quick-Release
weights use a "Plunger" to attach to the weight "Receiver" that's made
from stainless steel . The receivers fit the plungers snuggly, yet
they can be separated with a bit of pressure. If you look closely at the
receivers/weights pictured below you can see the o-ring which allows for
the retention of the plunger within the weight, and provides for the
release upon reasonable pressure. There are two sizes of plungers
stocked, the smaller sold in units of three and the larger size packed
in twos. The small plunger will fit receivers/weights from 1 up to 16
ounces. The larger plunger fits a different group of weigths, from 8
up to 30 ounces . If you are doing some dropper loop fishing, this is
a great way to go. Quick-Release weights are made to
detach ,
so if you get hung-up on the bottom you can break free . You're
less likely to get hung up given their shape, but if you do, you'll most
likely get back your plunger as well as the rest of your rig. If the
conditions change or you move to an area of different depth, you can
simply change weights and leave the rest of your rig alone - saving time
and hassle. Hmm, you can also travel on the water without worrying that
an improperly stored rod/reel/terminal-rig with weight flying around and
cracking your gelcoat or breaking windows...you can simply detach the
weight. Good concept, very good execution and pretty darn trick device
that offers a great deal of flexibility. Add to all this, it's a lead
free product, and constructed of quality materials.

Zak Tackle from
Tacoma offers some great lures made for going after the
big
one's too. We're stocking several well proven rigs that will get you
in the zone, and get you bit! First up are the single and double drop
rigs. These are rigged on 250# mono with a squid skirt and juice
holder. You can see the holder in the picture to the left, it's great
for added some scent, fish oil or chopped bait. The larger rigs use
huge circle hooks, while the single uses a J hook. Most folks
will add a strip bait to the lure for added enhancement. Two of our
offerings use a double skirt rig and one a single. Typically guys will
fish the single in shallower waters, and use the doubles deeper, but
that's a personal preference type of thing.
For targeting the big barn
door halibut use the doubles. For smaller fish of 50#'s or so, the
single is the way to go. All three of
these rigs will glow, they are luminescent, for added attraction in
deeper or discolored waters.

The HUGE Bottom Jigs
in 16 and 24 ounce weights do a wonderful job
of putting you in the zone for the better
grade halibut or an large bottom fish. These
come with great
13/0 Mustad jig hooks and are double
skirted for better durability and performance.
The lead head is also rubber coated. The lures
have a scent absorbing sponge attached to the
shank of their hook. We're stocking these
lures in three luminescent patterns. This is
one of the more productive lures you can run
for Alaskan and Pacific Northwest Halibut,
it's well proven.

Fishing deeper
water or selectively looking for larger fish?
There's one sure way to cull the small ones by
simply targeting the big ones. Use a larger bait. These
lures are big.
We've commissioned some
bigger lures you might want to try on the fish
lurking in your deeper waters. We're now
pleased to offer a REALLY LARGE mojo style twin
tail lure that looks like what you'd expect down
deep. This huge
lure probably equals the weight of a half dozen 6" mojos
(shown for comparison in the image above)!
This is a big and very meaty lure.
Folks fishing up in Alaska have been very happy
with the performance of this lure. The largest
lingcod will appreciate these major league offerings, I
hope you do too! (lures are priced each)
Mojo or Scampi leadheads are
what you need for rigging twin
and single tail swimbaits. We've got weights to match any
application, from 1/2 ounces all the way up to six ounces and more on
special order.
Boneyard Baits
GIANTS
BYB
is another small firm making custom lures, these focused
towards big predatory Alaskan Halibut and Ling Cod. We'd heard of
'em, did some tracking, and liked what they had to offer: a unique
product, based on proven design and plenty of time on the water
successfully catching larger grade fish. We're stocking two great
styles of soft plastic lures from Boneyard. The 11" BIG single tail
grub, Big Bone Grub, which caught the 2006 IGFA Ling Cod World
Record and also won the 2008 Homer Halibut Derby - gaining a $45K
prize! The Smaller grub, the Wishbone Twin Tail is the newest lure
from these folks, and again a huge bait measuring 8 inches from tip
to the bottom of the curve on the tail section - stretched it's
longer by a couple inches. These are big baits. The diameter of the
head is almost 1 1/2" on the Single Tail, and 3/4 on the Twin Tail.
So, they'll accommodate larger "Scampie or Mojo" style heads of 8,
12, 16 ounces. The unrigged lures are packed three per box.
