Mojo Wet and Wild Shoe
The Non-Deck Boot!
Proper
footwear is a good thing while fishing. There's
some protection required as well as comfort,
those should be top considerations. On
most long range boats the deckies will insist on
it from a safety standpoint, and thongs or
flipity-flops
don't provide the safety that's necessary. So,
deckboots are the norm or a pair of topsiders.
Both have their downsides. Mojo, well known for
making some excellent boating attire
(manufacturer's of our SPF shirts) came up with a
new product which was first shown at ICAST in
July 2012. It's one of the new products that caught
my eye at the show and I jumped on 'em. We're
the first dealer to stock the new shoe, and
I think other guys will be equally impressed
with them as we bring them to market.
The new shoes are super
comfortable and weigh in a just a couple ounces,
they truly are feather weight. They feature
technical construction materials with an EVA
outer Sole and removable inner sole. They are
water and stain resistant, of course, with
action leather uppers and quick drain side
vents. The non skid non-marking outer soles do
their job very well. And, your feet are
protected from sun and scrapes. The enclosed toe
is a very good thing compared to flipity-flops
or sandals, and of course the water draining
feature sure beats tennis shoes on a boat. And,
comfort...well here's a reason to give the
venerable deck boot a kick. These things feel so
good on the feet! One last point, a good pair of
deckboots run about $80, these come in at under
$40 and they'll prove more comfortable on or off
the boat.
I bought myself a pair of
the shoes and can offer some feedback. They
ain't too bad a product! Size is accurate, not
like your basic boot in this regard. I wear a
size 11 shoe, and that's the size Wet & Wild
shoe that fit me. They are NOT sized like a deck
boot, 1/2 size large is the common sizing on deckboots. Just to get used to 'em I was wearing 'em
at home doing some yard work under my wife's
direction... Well, as some of you know, she's a
Russian gal, and while practical in many
respects she does have an eye for good fashion.
She was not all that impressed with my new shoes
at first, but before we were done pulling weeds
she asked me for a pair. Only problem there is
that she would need a size 5... The darn things
are functional, both on the boat and around the
yard. These are what I'm going to be wearing
this season, that's for sure. Super light, have
decent traction, and they offer enough
protection to be worn safely - unlike a pair of
flip-flops. And, if they get wet who cares, the
water runs out and you're still in the game. One
negative point I found was that when worn
without socks you may need to stretch the
back part of the leather a tad. I found that
one was a bit tight on the back of my ankle.
Easy fix, I stuck on a bandaid, then got the
shoe wet and it resized. That's the only
negative I can report, and it was easy
enough to deal with.

Xtra
Tuf Boots
Extra Tuf
boots is the choice of many long rangers. They run about a half size
large, accommodating insole inserts which we sell. With the
insert, comfort is on a high plane. Xtra Tuf produce a good,
likely the best, work boot. These are the one's the deckhands wear,
no greater testament than that for long range fishing. They're excellent products, and will last a long, long
time. For our clients with wet climates, you'll get a double
dose of use from these finely crafted products. One point to
note, in 2011 production of these boots went overseas. They are no
longer made in Washington. Quality is still top notch, and no other
alternative boots of this type exist to our knowledge. Certainly there
are a few others, but they are poor substitutes, often made of inferior
materials and are not as comfortable. If you need deckboots, these are
your best/only options.
To make your booting experience
even more cushy...and to make the Xtra Tuff boots size right (given they
run about 1/2 size large) we recommend using the Servus insoles.
They help provide a bit more cushion and arch support.
