CharkBait
Rods
Please note, we have
three pages of Custom CharkBait rods. You've reached our Calstar and
Seeker Special Application and Custom Boat Rod page.
The first group of
rods featured on this page utilize blanks by Seeker and Calstar.
These spefic blanks have gained widespread fame based upon long
range fishing success. They are not rods for everyone, but for those
targeting Cow size tuna or tossing wahoo bombs, these are some
wonderful pieces to own.
Rounding out the
offerings on this page are our own Custom Boat Rods, designed for
West Coast style fishing, with actions well proven for the needs of
anglers targeting bass, barracuda, yellowtail and tuna. There's
great value with these USA produced rods, hard to imagine with a
truly custom built rod.

Seeker and Calstar
Custom Sticks
In the world of long range
fishing Seeker established a rather unique new tool for folks
targeting tuna, larger grade cow size tuna, their 2 x 4. The
concept behind this rod was to build a rod capable of casting a
bait further to lure a fish that might be out of range using more
traditional means. The rod had a relatively light tip, but
followed that up with serious strength in the butt section.
Calstar echoed that design, and expanded upon it very successfully
with a lighter range of offerings and lighter weight.
For our custom versions of
these new factory rods, we also had a concept to fulfill. The cow
rods ultimately wind up on the rail of the big long range boats.
That's part of their design. But, the Seeker and Calstar do not
build them with that in mind. Our cow rods feature a rail pad, so
you won't beat up your rod when you try to leverage a big tuna at
the rail. Further, we felt we could build the Seeker with a better
guide set, and add a roller tip. The Fuji guides we use feature a
rolled lip, securing the spectra safe insert, verses a stamped
guide with glued on spectra insert. Ours is arguably better. The
roller tip we use is a Winthrup, a big meaty tip top with enough
room to fit a pencil through the thing. So, there's no issue with
line and knot diameter and better dissipation of heat and less
friction. We make excellent use of some great blanks with our
custom designed rods, built right and better than the original. We
also make the Rail Rods with AFTCO ring/roller tiptops. These are
a bit lighter in weight than the larger Winthrups, have plenty of
clearance for casting, and represent another option on the custom
rods that go beyond the factory's offering.
Another rod in this series
we're quite proud to have in the line is Calstar's 875 wahoo
specialty rod. Again, it's better built, though Calstar does
indeed build a great rod, we found a few things to improve upon
the design and of course ours are prettier and arguably better
built!
New models added,
03/2011 : Seeker added both lighter
and heavier versions of their well proven 2x4 to their lineup. The
new 1x3 is a Great 80# rod, the new 3x5 is a 130# and up brute for
those guys needing even more power than the original 2x4. Like our
treatment of the 2x4, our custom built versions of these rods
feature a rail pad and use of Fuji's best rolled insert guide for
reliable use of Spectra and enough clearance for any wind-on made.
Further, we've added two favorite long range rods to our mix, the
6470 and 6470H. These rods are using the same Fuji guides but do
not include the rail piece since that's not the typical
application of these rods. 6470 series rods are most commonly used
for wahoo and for casting to schoolie tuna. Like the 2x4 concept,
they are built for both power and casting.
Please note, our custom
series Seeker rods are a considerable step up from the factory
rods. Our guide selection and components are better (in my
estimation), and we offer some features that the factory does not
offer such as a rail pad for the X series rods.

Custom Boat Rods
| Custom rods do not have to be
expensive, we have a high value custom built series of rods
available in the most used line classes for nearshore and offshore
duty. All are triple wrapped with Spectra safe guides using
Rainshadow composite blanks. There are four rods in the series. a
196, 270, 870 and 670 for use with lines of 12# through 50#
applications. We initially had these rods made to match our Newell
Blue and Pink reels, but folks have requested the rods for use with
other reels as well. So, we're offering them as an independent item,
too. |

CharkStraps &
CharkWraps
Two new items from us, not necessarily
the most creative or revolutionary products we've ever come
up with, but nonetheless they are useful and they are a bit
different than what's available from others.
Our RodWraps are an upgrade from the
StickJackets we've carried for several years. We've made
ours a bit larger in
diameter so that they will accommodate larger saltwater
guides, even larger spinning guides. The StickJackets were
really made for freshwater use, sized accordingly but we
used their spinning models for our application. Now we've
got 'em made our way. We've reinforced the
top with a leatherette end piece and metal grommet which can
be used to hang rods, and we've increased the diameter to
allow your rods, even those using larger AFTCO wind-on
roller guides or larger size spinning guides to fit. The
Wraps are about 5 feet in length, will extend down the rod
into the handle material of most rods. They are not made to
cover the entire rod, only that portion it's designed to
protect - the blank, the finish, the guides.
These
wraps are all that I've been using now for the past few
years. I like the fact that I can use them for storage
protection, travel protection as well as leave 'em on my
rods on the boat. They are breathable and they don't absorb
moisture. So, they help me protect my rods when they're
bundled up once the fishing is over. On most long range
trips out of San Diego, you move your rods onto the boat and
off the boat all bundled up. They may stay that way
overnight on the boat as well. For a cloth sock, that's no
good. So, you can write off any protection of the rod. With
these things you do get that protection when you need it
most. I even leave them on my rods when I get home. I'll
spray off the rod wraps while still on the rod, loosening
any accumulated saltwater in the process. Then I'll take off
the wraps, clean the rods more thoroughly and allow them to
dry. Use of a cleaner like Penn's Rod and Reel cleaner for
that, and you've got things in great shape for your next
trip and your gear will stay in new condition. The Wraps are
5 feet in length.
The other product we have for rod
organization are our CharkStraps. These are great for
bundling your rods together for transport or storage. You
can secure up to a half dozen rods with these things. Nice
thing about ours verses some others, they are made from a
softer foam/rubber material so they'll never scratch up your
rods. Unlike some similar products I've seen, we made it a
point to include three different sizes (which makes sense
since you'll use all three at different positions on your
bundled rods from the tip to near the reel seat). So, you
get three straps, all with Velcro through their length to
handle most any size bundle of rods you'll be totting, from
2 to 6 or more rods.
CharkBait
Rod Socks
Our Chark-Sleeves are
a bit different than the one's above. They are
available in three sizes. The base of the
sleeve folds up onto the butt section of the
rod and then can be tied off. So, one size can
fit shorter rods with no problem. They are
made of 89% polyester and 11% lycra (like OJ's
gloves if you remember...). The material is
versatile, durable and quick drying. It's
super stretchy, and the micro polyester fabric
wicks away moisture - like those $60 golf
shirts. Nice product, nice price! These will
stretch up to one foot longer in length. So, a
5' will indeed fit a 6' rod, the 7 will
stretch to a tight 8.
