Toro Tamer
Offshore Explorer
Boat Rods
NEW -
Light, Responsive, Quality Components & Power!
Our Toro Tamer Offshore
Explorer Boat Rods are exceptional in both quality
and value. The rods feature Fuji guides and reel
seat, graphite construction and moderate/fast
action - not a parabolic jigging rod, rather a rod
suitable for live bait and iron. This is
another of those projects that took a bit of time,
more than we'd have liked. We really hoped
we
could have had these in stock for our local summer
season, but with something like this we're happy
to see 'em come in whenever they make it. These
rods share actions similar to Calstar's Grafighter
series, produced offshore by one of the better
factories in Asia - a quality factory producing
rods for two very well known USA firms. They are quality produced, with quality
components, by a very innovative rod specialty
firm.
We stayed with quality Fuji components, very good
guides with inserts to deal with the more modern braided lines
successfully - long term. The rods feature Fuji reel seats and nice
aluminum gimbals for the two heavier models. There are three models
in the line, a 12-20# rod that's very suitable for fishing 15-20#
line, a 20-40# stick that's ideal for fishing 30#, and a 30-50#
model that's dialed in for 40#. They all pull very well, and are
very light in the hands. You will like the rods, and you won't find
a better value better value for anywhere near their price.

Mini Tuna Sticks
CharkBait's Mini Tuna Stick, or MTS for short.
Several years ago we offered a
pretty interesting piece, the old Toad Tamer series of short rods.
The little rods were fun to fish, but unfortunately we ran into problems with
continuity of production. Our old models used Shikari blanks which
were quite nice but a bit more brittle than a fiberglass blank for
this type of use. For this production we've upgraded to USA made
Seeker blanks. The Seeker's will prove more robust and are capable of
harder pulling. There have been a few similar shorty rods on the market
using a range of blanks from very good to downright cheezy. We're proud
to say, these are the best shorty panga rods made, and we've done
some improving for 2013 as you'll note below on our MTS4050.
(for lack of a more appealing model...here's John our shop's manager
showing off one of our MTS rods, above. Below, well, I found a
slightly better model while my wife was on vacation - sorry John)

The MTS is a shorty, 4' in
length using high quality Seeker blanks, and made here in
America with top quality components. We use Fuji reel seats and AFTCO light weight roller guides
through all the 3 models offered. We go beyond most manufacturers of
this style rod, having three distinct models, based upon different
blanks and reel seats, in five different
colors. Our lightest 15-30# rod features a Fuji trigger grip for
added control in casting and feel. The next size us also uses a Fuji
seat, but in a more conventional composite form for use with heavier lines
@
20-40#. The 40-50# MTS has a full aluminum reel seat and aluminum
gimbal. We also have upgraded the guideset to the New ALPS rollers
which will accommodate use of the heavier lines and deal with larger
diameter knots and leaders more easily. All models
feature a gimbal butt, even the trigger grip MTS 1530.
Please note, these are custom made rods. We maintain
some inventory, for instance the new MTS4050 in our Metallic Red
wrap. But, most rods will require time to custom build for you. So,
have some patience. Your rod will probably require 4 weeks to be
built.

For 2013 we made an excellent
adjustment to our MTS 4050, the model suitable for
fishing 40-50# lines. In the past our heaviest line
class model made use of AFTCO light rollers, a very nice
guideset as is pictured on the rods above. But, ALPS
recently came out with a nicer group of guides for the
heavier lines this rod accommodates. The Light AFCO's
are really intended for 40# and down, the new ALPS
mini-rollers are a bit meatier and more rugged. No
knock on the light AFTCO's, they are excellent. It's
just that the new ALPS guides are a good deal tricker in
our estimation, and nicer for the heavier applications
for which this rod is intended. Given their clearance
and size they will accommodate use of Braided lines and
bulkier connecting knots more easily, as well. So, going
forward we're building our 4050 model with the new ALPS
guides. If you prefer your rod to be built using the
AFTCO's we can certainly do that, it's your option. We
are stocking the 4050 in our metallic red wrap using the
new guides - so that's an option for more immediate
delivery. |

Hi John
I came in a few weeks back and bought a
custom MTS
shorty and reel for my
eight-year-old-son Parris.
I took him on a seven day and we paired
the 20-40 # stick with an Avet SX two-speed. He landed a 32#
yellowtail. What a great set up. See you soon and thanks. Here's
Parris with deck hand Kevin on the Independence. Below is deckhand

CharkStraps &
CharkWraps
Two new items from us, not necessarily
the most creative or revolutionary products we've ever come
up with, but nonetheless they are useful and they are a bit
different than what's available from others.
Our RodWraps are an upgrade from the
StickJackets we've carried for several years. We've made
ours a bit larger in
diameter so that they will accommodate larger saltwater
guides, even larger spinning guides. The StickJackets were
really made for freshwater use, sized accordingly but we
used their spinning models for our application. Now we've
got 'em made our way. We've reinforced the
top with a leatherette end piece and metal grommet which can
be used to hang rods, and we've increased the diameter to
allow your rods, even those using larger AFTCO wind-on
roller guides or larger size spinning guides to fit. The
Wraps are about 5 feet in length, will extend down the rod
into the handle material of most rods. They are not made to
cover the entire rod, only that portion it's designed to
protect - the blank, the finish, the guides.
These
wraps are all that I've been using now for the past few
years. I like the fact that I can use them for storage
protection, travel protection as well as leave 'em on my
rods on the boat. They are breathable and they don't absorb
moisture. So, they help me protect my rods when they're
bundled up once the fishing is over. On most long range
trips out of San Diego, you move your rods onto the boat and
off the boat all bundled up. They may stay that way
overnight on the boat as well. For a cloth sock, that's no
good. So, you can write off any protection of the rod. With
these things you do get that protection when you need it
most. I even leave them on my rods when I get home. I'll
spray off the rod wraps while still on the rod, loosening
any accumulated saltwater in the process. Then I'll take off
the wraps, clean the rods more thoroughly and allow them to
dry. Use of a cleaner like Penn's Rod and Reel cleaner for
that, and you've got things in great shape for your next
trip and your gear will stay in new condition. The Wraps are
five feet in length.
The other product we have for rod
organization are our CharkStraps. These are great for
bundling your rods together for transport or storage. You
can secure up to a half dozen rods with these things. Nice
thing about ours verses some others, they are made from a
softer foam/rubber material so they'll never scratch up your
rods. Unlike some similar products I've seen, we made it a
point to include three different sizes (which makes sense
since you'll use all three at different positions on your
bundled rods from the tip to near the reel seat). So, you
get three straps, all with Velcro through their length to
handle most any size bundle of rods you'll be totting, from
2 to 6 or more rods.
CharkBait
Rod Socks
Our Chark-Sleeves are
a bit different than the one's above. They are
available in three sizes. The base of the
sleeve folds up onto the butt section of the
rod and then can be tied off. So, one size can
fit shorter rods with no problem. They are
made of 89% polyester and 11% lycra (like OJ's
gloves if you remember...). The material is
versatile, durable and quick drying. It's
super stretchy, and the micro polyester fabric
wicks away moisture - like those $60 golf
shirts. Nice product, nice price! These will
stretch up to one foot longer in length. So, a
5' will indeed fit a 6' rod, the 7 will
stretch to a tight 8.
